Money was always an issue on the farm as it is on most farms so I’ve spent a lot of nights with father wrenching on machinery you needed to work the next day. The joys of fifty plus year old iron.

I just spent the afternoon rebuilding the steering gearbox on a White 2-155. Dad has two. They are cheap horsepower, not the comfiest, but will get work done.

You ever get stuck on any of the old red iron I’ve got a pretty good collection of shop manuals for internationals. I bought all the manuals when our local dealership folded but it’s ih and Massey there’s a few case manuals mixed in. There weren’t many fords locally the odd 2n and 8n but nothing newer. Deere’s never caught on until the last ten years or so.

You guys have country enough to use big gear like that , most of our fields are 6-8 acres we got buy with forty or fifty horsepower gear. The last tractor I bought before dad got sick and we had to sell out was a 265 Massey and a new holland 855 round baller. Only got one season before we had to sell but it was awsome not having to work square hay anymore.

That 265 had a leak in the injector system some where I never could find, it would bleed off every night and every morning I’d have to pump it up on the lift pump then bleed the injectors for dad before going to work I bet I could still bleed a 235 Perkins with a coffee in one hand. Ain’t it funny how things you hate at the time can make you smile years down the road?

I grew up running an old Ford 8N/9N (8N but with a 12 V Battery) and an International.

I am currently looking get my own to till my garden and grate the driveway. Thinking about a used JD 855 or 955. Don’t have a need for a full size.

We’ve got a gm in the boat I’m fishing on bob , 6v92 turbo faithfully takes a gallon of oil every trip.

A strapping young fella like you should be able to 6 to 8 acres with a shovel in a couple of days, harvest with a synthetic.
If you want big tractors go to Western NSW and look at the big 420hp 4x4 Stiegers dragging 60 odd foot wide multi row disc plough.
Where harvesting is done with 3 or 4, 36 foot combine harvesters running side by side and empty at the end of each tow. That's a sight to behold.
One farm I carted grain( out the back of Piincarrie) off went 36 bags per ace of prime hard wheat and it took 3 days to harvest the paddock with the above combination. That's unusual but it was on a big flood plain the year after it flooded.

Put 95G marine injectors in it screw the pump up and open the revs up to 3,300rpm and watch that baby hum.
You may have to refill the tank before you leave the Harbor but boy will it go.
The V6 92TT W model Kenworth that I drove was set up like that, good for a tad over 100mph with a 13 speed overdrive road ranger. If you stuck the boot into it it really sucked the fuel. But hey fuel was cheap back then. Ah the good old days when you drove fast trucks fast.

My first one as a kid was a stripped down Model A Ford with a Dodge truck rear end and trans. If I put both gearboxes in reverse the tractor would go ahead, but slower than I could walk. That rig hauled a lot of hay on a rack and dragged a bunch of logs over the years. Chain up the rear tires and it was almost unstoppable.

Our family farm is in Essex County Ontario. Somewhere I’ve got pictures of my grandfather and great uncle in Saskatchewan with our threshing machine working the wheat harvest. The Ontario boys would load up on rail cars and go out and work the Western harvest before coming back and taking in our crops.

We also had an ice house and ice harvesting equipment and sold ice to city folks in the summer.

Those old settlers were tough and not afraid to tackle anything.

Half of my family were dairy farmers so I grew up spending summers driving tractors when I was 10 years old. What a thrill! When I owned my own 100+ acre farm I had a John Deere 5075E and everything imaginable as implements bi had 35+ acres of food plots and took some great Deere and turkey. When my wife died, I sold this farm and now have my 60 acre family farm that I only do hay. So I now have a John Deere 3031D that I use to bush hog my fields. This thread so warms my heart given riding a tractor for hours and smelling a fresh cut field are priceless!!!

One time I was custom planting soybeans in the Mississippi River bottoms for an ol boy, it was a 156 acre field in a big trapezoid. I started that field at noon and had it done by dark. I was using the TG 255 and a 16 row splitter.
We have plenty of small patches too, one of our farms is 22 acres in six patches, yes the 16 row goes in there too.
We plant our corn with an 8 row econo-fold pulled with a 2940 John Deere.
