For Sale Ruger M77 Hawkeye African 338

I bought this new about three and a half years ago for Namibia trip. It must have been one of those rifles made on a later Friday afternoon. Chamber was too short, forend pulled strongly to the right, stock finish was uneven, light areas, some blisters on the forend tip. Didn't shoot very well either. So, it has been refinished, glass bedded, chamber dealt with using a finish reamer (no marks on fired cases, headspace checked and good), trigger tuned, action smoothed. Trigger is very good. It will feed empty cases most the time, and you can barely feel it pickup a round from the magazine. Never fails to feed or eject. It has become a decent shooter with ammo it likes. It favors the 210 Barnes TTSX (handload). Five shots around an inch. Factory Barnes 225 TTSX shoots about 1.5" (100 yds) for five shots. Hates Nosler Partitions (3”-4” groups at 100 yds!).

Because of all the problems the rifle didn’t go to Namibia. If I return I will need a minimum of a 375 and I don’t have any need for this caliber in the US.

Comes with rings, thread protector, original muzzle break, and non-vented barrel attachment (which is supposed to assure it shoots to the same place when you shoot without the break).

Plebes at USMA (in my day) ate square meals - at attention, 90 movement of arm to mouth, bites no larger than the end of your thumb, order arms while you chew or a classmate is getting more beverage, etc..

If you and your classmates had a tight shot group and were doing their duties well, the table commandant would say "Alright beanheads - you've done a good job today, so 60 seconds big bites - GO!"

There was no size of bite restrictions now. When you were starving in Beast Barracks, any extra calories were welcome! Amazing how much food can be crammed into a lad's face in 60 seconds!

When I was in Corps at Texas A&M it was very much the same. 92-96. Square meals, fish bites, then had to slam fork or spoon down and resquare everything. At the end of chow, a junior would yell, “chow down”. No rules, no manners. Prob don’t that anymore I’m afraid.

Well, for one thing I already have a 375 Ruger and a Ruger No. 1 in 375 H&H! (Gun nut, of course, like all of us). Also, the Hawkeye actions are standard length and won't accommodate the H&H round without major surgery.

Hello JeffD, thank you sir for the info. I thought it was a Mag action, oops! Ahhhh, Ruger No 1s, I am huge fan of those single shot rifles. Boy, they are beautiful and addictive to own.

I love the Ruger No. 1 rifle’s and have seven or eight of them. They are addictive! If someone has a nice example of one of the varmint models in 223 we could talk about a trade.
