First Trail Cam Pics for 2012

Still vandals could destroy it, but they're going to need to bring a hammer, bat or gun with them to do that. My hunting buddy has a friend that put up a camera without the kind of protection that you get with the Reconyx and some idiot destroyed it.

Wouldnt they be suprised if the smashed cameras memory remained in tact and there were pics of them smashing it. There is no figuring idiots out.

And God said, "Let there be rain"

And so it was......and there was great rejoicing.......and swimming!

Things didn't quite load correctly in the order I wanted. Once you've clicked through all pics and there uploaded, run them in reverse on pics 12 through 8 to get a better sense of motion of the elk.

That is one happy little devil. Thanks.

Wish I could show all the pics, it's pretty comical to see the elk playing. The water hole is pretty full now, not quite as full as we've seen it in the past, but everything is so much more lush now. Just makes everything fat and happy!

Bulls beginning to show on the cameras, from my buddy's.....

Looks like someone will be getting a chance soon.

Hopefully. Unfortunately cattle have been moved into the area where I killed my bull two years ago! Cattle and elk just don't mix.

hope it goes well, great to see the rain return to the north county and for us down here in the valley It's been a brutal August

LOL! All the way thru this thread Phil, you are screaming for rain and now...? Please stop. We have had a dry if not very overly summer here in the PNW, with a little rain due tomorrow, first in some time. But we make up for in fall, winter and spring... Good luck huntin'!!

good luck Phil

bluey,

This is a pretty nice bull by most standards. But at the risk of sounding like I'm bragging on Arizona elk, this bull is really fairly average in comparison to what is out there. I'm not that great at guessing elk scores, but I'd estimate he's around a 320 score. His tines have decent length, but they're not super heavy.

I think this bull could be pretty special in another year. I think he's still not quite done growing. The rut has started and the bulls will quit eating during the rut, but it's still early yet. If you look at the pic again, the bulls belly is that of a younger animal and isn't pot bellied like an older bull. I also don't think he's made it to herd bull status. He was not with any cows and again if you look at this pic, you can tell he's bugling. Old enough to be looking for love, but not quite old enough to be finding it.

Now having said that, if he makes the mistake of crossing my path this year, I'll take him if I can. A 6x6 bull elk with archery gear is a hard earned trophy.

Why wapiti? Wapiti is an American Indian word that translates to "white rump."

What can I say, my dad grew up on a farm. Bitchin' about the weather is in the genes!

thanks for that phil i really appreciate it i only hope that i can come accross one like that in bc next week
i will be trying for an archery kill but if that fails i will the 300 rum as back up
you say the rut has now started thats great news as our hunt was booked for the peak .
do they rut at the same time all over america ?
thaks again phil
and good luck with that awesome animal

Opening day today......worked a couple of bulls this morning but couldn't get close. Bugled a decent 6x6 to 50 yards this evening but he hung up there in some brush. Overall the rut seems to not be going full on, very little bugling.

Setup an intercept tonite on a saggy bellied grandpa bull. Unfortunately the bull moved faster than we thought and I was about 5 seconds late to a spot that would have given a 30 yard shot. A bit bummed but it sure was fun.

Sounds like you are having a great time.
One of my big dreams is to hunt bugling Elk with my bow.
Good luck with the rest of the hunt and I hope you get a nice one.
Looking forward to the report and photos :)

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
