First experience with the new firearms export system

They very seldom reply to emails, you need to give them a call and talk to one of their flunkies.

Ok guys. I am hearing that we have to do all this now, and then I am hearing that you don't have to yet. When we got our 4457 forms from Customs, the agent said there were new regulations but they were not being enforced yet and no one seemed to know when or if they would be. We are going in late August and I figured I would just chance it, but after reading some of this I don't know what to do. Anyone have any definitive info on this BS ?
Since this hunt is already booked I will have to do what I have to do, but I guess this is the last time I will take my guns out of the country, this really sucks....

No, and that's the problem. The customs website says one thing and the agents tell us another.

Just call Safari Speciality Importers. If you are a client they'll take of it for you.

Yesterday I got an email from Susan over at Travel with Guns explaining it with some more clarity. Once you get your EIN number from the IRS website (issued instantly upon passing the quiz) you can wait to register your effects via EEI (after you clear the AES) until just a few days before your flight. That bit is actually very quick going by current reports. This seems to be the only part of this that is any sort of reasonable thus far.

I'm getting ready for a BC bear hunt next month and I was considering taking my gun, so I decided to delve into the new system and get it figured out. Decorum does prevent me from using the words I used last night.

I already have my EIN, so I was good there.

I signed up for the AES, then took the quiz to be certified (nobody told me there was a test on this) I failed it, retook it and passed (I have the answers if anybody wants them). I logged into the AES to do the EEI and it would not let me as I am an administrator on the account. So I created myself another account a user, did my EEI and it generated a ------------- Wait for it------------Fatal error.

I logged out and retried it, it then told me I could not ship to myself. At this point I'm drinking and tired. so I gave up and called the help desk this morning. Needless to say she was not that helpful, but she was polite.

still no TIN.

My thoughts are that the system is needlessly complicated and the average user will struggle, especially when it come to the harmonized codes for the firearms and the ammo. But oddly enough my real struggle was with creating a password for the account(s) it must be 12 letters, a mix of upper and lower case numbers and symbols. but it cannot contain any dictionary words.
Do you have any recommendation on which sort alcohol works best when doing this? Beer? brown liquor?

I'm eyeballing a bottle of Makers Mark currently

There is no quiz to secure your EIN, only a quiz to register with AES to complete your EEI that will then issue your ITN which then permits you to export your weapon and ammo thru Customs, if all your information is current with your export firearm and ammo. I spoke with Customs export yesterday. Currently only 4457 being used, she said they were working on the logistics and no timeframe as to when or how it will be implemented, just keep checking back. She knew the situation with the ITN requirement, but no idea when this may be required or implemented..... Broncolgj, Wild Turkey 101' my recommendation.

Right, of course.
I may be suffering from acronym fatigue

Jim Beam Devil's Cut works well!

Well, from the looks of all this confusion, I imagine I will start with some cheap vodka, work my way up to a fine scotch like Glendronach and then finish with a little vodka to calm down. This kind of indecisive, no one knows whats going on, government crap really gets under my skin. Sorry but I do think this is a backdoor way to discourage international travel with guns for hunting and probably tied to the UN Gun Treaty that was signed but not ratified....

Pretty sure James said he was drinking beer. Wouldn't be surprised if he switched to the hard stuff before he was done though. :D Beers::D Booze:

I have found that when dealing with any government regulations to find a bottle that is at least 100 proof and take a hammer and smack you foot, then start on the whiskey and start on the forums.

I don't know if this has been mentioned in any of the related threads...but the agents I spoke with yesterday said the intention is to eliminate the 4457 eventually and just make everyone use AES to create EEI to get ITN for these temporary "exports".

I have no idea what is true anymore....just reporting what I was told.

Gotta love all the acronyms!

Okee dokee, just applied for My EIN. Took me all of 5 minutes and that included rereading this post and the email I got from Travel with Guns for any information. Approved instantly. No kidding. No alcohol either.

Easiest transaction I've ever had with the government and. . . Is that a drone over my house?

The EIN is the easy one. Now you get to go after the ITN which is a pain from what I have read.

In that case I am very grateful that the agents now have a system in place to obtain that for us.

Quick update: Got everything taken care of with great ease. Scanned and emailed my EIN and 4457 form to my travel agent and they had my ITN back to me the next morning. I don't know how agencies handle it but Travel with Guns is proving to be a godsend.

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
