Finding the one gun

Like other members here your opinion is worth far more than two cents. I'm still debating if and if I do what pattern.
I think a nice 29-24 lpi old time pattern would be nice. Don't want any of this fancy skipline or fleur de lis. That would be to much
Bob
Bob I agree, keep it simple but elegant.

I appreciate that.

Definitely simple fine line checkering. It will still allow the dark grain to shine through if done right.

Regardless, that's a cool rifle. Cool caliber as well. I need to own a single shot.
@CJW
My gunsmith said an old english wrap around borderless 20 or 22 lpi would look good and give good grip whereas the 24lpi may be to fine and the diamonds would flatten quicker over time.
I think the forend need to be slimmer and a border each side but he thinks a nice wrap around check.
Thought from all appreciated
Bob

Yeah the 24 would wear a lot quicker. Definitely borderless I think.

Do you mean slimming the entire forend? Like in removing wood? Either way I would do a full wrap. Very classy.

Dare I say that you might like it with just the wrist checkered? Especially if you slim the forend.

For the Aussies here, what rings are you running on your Highland Stalker?
Hexalock are pretty high and possibly set the scope too far forward
Recknagel mixed reviews
EAW seem to be the pick but $$$

This is what I have on mine. Seems to work fine for me..

@NIGHTHAWK , there is nothing wrong with a .243, power to you for standing by your choice.

I have only seen one Blaser in the flesh. It had a nice timber stock. They can look quite nice in the right configuration. Just a modern twist on a sporting rifle.

I would like a nice bolt action classic rifle but the Blaser is expensive by my standards making the Rigby seem bloody expensive.

Poking fun at a Blaser is like poking fun at Bob. Nobody takes them seriously.

Poking fun at a Blaser is like poking fun at Bob. Nobody takes them serious have a lot of different rifles and shotguns. Some pretty nice, but most are functional and the custom or semi-custom rifles are built for accuracy. They are not particularly fancy. This includes the .243. I can give 2 shits what others are shooting their 80 to 100 grain bullets out of, or through, as long as they feel that their objective was met. I hadn’t considered how effective that .243 could be until my PH and others encouraged to use it on larger plains game. Thats why I post the results in my reports. That said, I’m certain that last Roan I shot wI’ll likely be the end of the spectrum. I’m not interested in stunts or proving points and I certainly don’t want to injure and animal abs have it run off.

I thought about bringing that .243 to Sonora on my recent Mule deer hunt, but I wanted to use my MOA 300 RUM in the event I needed to make a longer shot, let’s just say longer than 400 yards. Well, I ended up with a 200 plus yard shot and that was that. Is a 300 RUM “too much rifle” for a Mule Deer? Are Berger VLD Hunting Bullet the right bullet? I’m sure some “keyboard killer” will come on this thread and try to shit on everything I used, even though it was with great success and a first hand report was made detailing my experience.

As a practice, I try not to weigh in on something I haven’t tried or looked at and this applies to Blaser. Blaser was suggested to me at one point because they had the LH option, but by then I already had most of my Left Hand rifles built. I do appreciate when Blaser owners or users are truthful about the results of their rifles performance in the field.

To each their own…

@NIGHTHAWK - there’s nothing wrong with putting a bigger hole in a deer then needed — so what if you lose a “spoonful of meat” and if you shoot you .300 RUM accurately and have confidence in it - great choice ! You made a good shot on a good buck - no one can argue that FACT.
On a guided “paid hunt” I would want a rifle that would cover all possible scenarios even though I’m a .243 fan. I use .243 for Antelope and also deer hunting around home where I know the area and am certain there are No B&C class bucks around. For Mule deer and other “away hunts” I’ve taken a .270 or .30-06. I don’t shoot magnums only because I shoot my .30-06 well and am confident in it but know others that handle their magnums well too. However, I also know guys that “flinch” badly and still insist on magnums and most of the bad shots I’ve seen made or missed in deer camps where guys using magnums and couldn’t handle them (or maybe they just couldn’t shoot anything??)
