I am considering purchasing a rifle in .404 Jeffery, but I cannot find a single round of ammunition for said caliber. Am I doing something wrong, or is there just none to be had?

Loaded ammo and complements are very difficult to find for sure. You just have to keep searching. I’ve actually been able to pick up some brass and some projectiles from people here on AH over the course of the last year. I don’t reload so I’ve sent it off to get reloaded and have been pleased with the results. I believe I’ve got enough solids and expandables to last me several years worth of hunting. I will say if you do find some buy it if you can. Hopefully some of the manufactures will make some more soon.

Man, it is rough out there! I have been hooked on the bigger boomers and have sold a lot of the diminutive .404 :) components on here for roughly what I had in it. Hell, if I sold it on gunbroker I could have paid for a roan or sable. :)

I still have some solids I will likely never use, and kept adequate brass and A-frames. A month or so ago I was checking out a gun and as I was walking out I put on the brakes. $100 was too enticing to pass up. Even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and again.

.404 Jefferey components are almost impossible to find right now.

If it were me, I would wait until factory ammo is available again.

If it becomes available, find factory ammo in expanding and solids that shoots to the same POI at 100m.

Then, buy 10 boxes of each before they disappear forever.

Best of luck. We sold maybe 80 or so boxes of Norma 404 Jeffery ammo (solids) in January or February of this year. Haven't been able to find any since then... Bertram USA gets the brass in every now and then, but it's definitely on the more expensive side. If we get more ammo or the brass, you can bet I'll let everyone on here know.

I look every day for 404j and 500j, very hard to come by. Thankfully I have lots of 500j brass.

You might contact Superior Ammunition or other custom loading service. They may have the components to build what you want.

I have Norma and RWS brass and Swift, Barnes and other bullets, but I am loathe to sell any because it may be difficult to replace. Just keep poking around and You will find ammo... the 404J is a great, proven caliber and worth the trouble.

Hendershots is an option and is showing certain bullet options available. Very expensive though.

I have five boxes of factory loaded Hornady solids and expanding (not bonded). These were bought a few years before covid if you are interested. I would not recommend they being used to hunt buffalo. I have only used some of the earlier ones I had for .404 range time. $500.00 plus shipping. I have Nosler and Barnes also but don't think I am interested in selling any of them, especially at $100 per box. If interested PM me with your contact info.

I have come to really trust this firm for their excellent custom loaded ammunition.

They are offering .404 Jeffery ammunition with an option of the following bullet offerings:
- Barnes (400Gr Banded Solids & TSX)
- Cutting Edge Bullets (400Gr Safari Solids)
- Hornady (400Gr DGX Bonded)
- Northfork (400Gr Bonded Soft Point)
- Swift (400Gr A Frame)

The Cutting Edge Bullets Safari Solids & Swift A Frames are all you need for the perfect full bag African safari.

The only reloading components which seem to be in steady supply are Hornady DGX bonded 400 gr, and a variety of North Forks over at Reloading International. They are currently out of the 400 gr semi-Spitzer solid shank, but they have quite a few others in .423, and always seem to.

Bought 100 brass in 404J from Bertram, paid almost as much for that brass as I do for 50 BMG. Suitable powder I have lots of, but what I can't find are magnum primers.

For practice bullets (assuming you reload) you can always get Hawk bullets. Bengal bullets also has lead coated 390 gr, with gas checks.

FWIW, I emailed Geoff McDonald at Woodleigh about a month ago, asked him specifically about .423 bullets. He says he should have some for sale by the end of 2023.

You should also be able to get Rhino bullets - you're going to pay a premium in shipping, though, since they're in RSA. Peregrine is also an option out of RSA, but again, you'll have to pay to have them shipped to the US.

What I need most for my 404J is to add about 1.5 or 1.75" to LOP. That's in the works, I just have a hundred other things going on at the moment.

Do you still have the 404 Jeff ammo?

maybe a moot point by now, but you can get .404 Jeffery (and some other less-than-common cartridges) at hendershot's (I'd put the url in, but blocked by censor ... hendershots dot net)

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
