Favorite Drink?

Velo Dog, try Glen Grant some time, no peat, no smoke. The whiskys fit on a sort of taste matrix with light and fruity in the bottom left corner and heavy smoke and peat in the top right. Glen Grant is in the bottom left, Lagavulin is at the top right. Glenfiddich is around the middle. It is fascinating how a particular house manages to keep so consistent a flavour for their product.

Me, I love the peat whiskies from Islay...the trick to enjoy them is, as the scots always do, dilute with cold water.. The water will even bring out more taste...a brilliant drink up north during winter or, for instance at night in Botswana in june..

I love scotch (Talisker and Oban were favorites, as were several from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society) but one day about 8 years ago it started giving me heartburn. Can't drink them any longer sadly.

So I've moved on to rye whiskeys. Favorites are Michters and Russells. With one large cube of ice. Also love sazaracs and boulevardiers made with rye. But I probably drink more vespers than anything else. It's a James Bond martini with lillet blanc (or kona lillet) instead of vermouth. Uses gin (I prefer Martin Millers) and vodka (Russian Standard) and a twist. Shaken of course.

But I'm also fond of Willamette Valley pinot, barolo, bordeaux, malbec, and several other red varietals. Had some delicious (and cheap!) dry reds on a vacation in Portugal just before COVID hit.

Amazing that I did not see this thread before. My 2 favorite post-hunt drinks....

On safari: Glenmorangie neat (no prep or planning required)
Hunting at home: 50/50 vodka martini (recipe below)

1. Keep vodka, vermouth, olives, glasses and blue cheese chilled so that no ice is used (dilutes the flavor).
2. Stuff olives with high-fat, high-quality, fresh blue cheese
3. Pour 2oz of vodka into the glass
4. Pour 2oz of vermouth into the glass
5. Add 2 stuffed olives

With good quality vodka and vermouth, this is a damn smooth drink.

Try the Caol Ila 12 years..
You and I need to get together for a few wee drams. Caol Ila is on my top 3 Islay choices.

- Edradour whisky (smallest distillery in Scotland)
- Glenmorangie Quinta Ruben
- Gin Tonic: Gin in this order: Mombasa Club, Ginmare, KWV Kruxland GIn, Highclere Castle gin, Beefeater, whatever is available; Tonic in this order: Fever Tree Light tonic, any Fever Tree tonic, whatever is available
- Pol Roget Champagne
- Rondel Brut Cava
- Cardenal Mendoza brandy
- Argentine Malbecs
- 1963 Port
- any really good Port
- Whatever Marc from Rigby is buying

Happy Christmas and Stay thirsty my friends!

Cardenal Mendoza brandy, my very favorite :D Drunk:

My favorite is a good clear rum, soda water and a splash of coke in a tall glass. A good bourbon on ice is also enjoyed.

I am simple.
Light beer. Bud light is favorite.
pina colada is second
chufa milk with rum third
Jager bomb/ Red Bull is fourth

Hakkiesdraad Mampoer

I was in Namibia 10 years ago,
It was the last night in the camp.
And the outfitter served this fine and strong "moonshine" but its not.
Just before we said gesondheid
The PH stuck his thumb in the booze.
And sat fire to his finger with a lighter.
Of course very discrete. Under the table.
I guess he was checking for metylen=
Yellow flames.

Someone mentioned apple pie moonshine. It is great! A jar of it and you don’t have to worry about anything for a few days.

Beer and red wine. I am simple.

I had to look it up. Sounds quite refreshing on a warm evening.
Well, it's snowing right now but it's refreshing nevertheless :-)

I was at a whiskey tasting and a young woman commented, with innocent honesty, "it tastes like licking a fireman's helmet"

On second thought, maybe not so "innocent"

But it made me laugh anyways.

My father, a fan of the peat whiskeys, thinks he has a heathen in the house as I prefer blends, Ryes and bourbons. Worse, I have developed a taste for grappa! Probably a sign of early onset dementia, but quite fun to drink.

LoL, ya she doesn’t sound especially innocent to me either.
In fact, she sounds like exactly the type of young woman every young man wishes he was acquainted with.

Regarding Rye, if you haven’t tried Templeton (from Iowa), I recommend it to those who enjoy a neat whiskey now and then.

Cheers.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
