Favorite carry on?

Red oxx has been good for me as well. Just returned from an 8 day missions trip to Cusco Peru and had all my clothes in it (4 changes of clothes) two coats and socks underwear. Fit nicely in smaller Latam flight and on international delta flight. Bag is durable and built for carry on function. It’s also been to RSA as well. My personal item is a backpack from Sam’s club by Swiss gear. Think I paid 35$. It gets abused. No damage on six international flights and at least weekly back pack use.

Red oxx beano pr5 is the bag.

Yep sky train comes with tuck away back pack straps. A carry handle and a shoulder strap that is removable! Very solid setup to me!

My brother uses the Skytrain and loves it. He's bring it as his CO to Namibia this week. I'm using a Boyt backpack. Change of clothes, meds, camera, binocs, paperwork and overnight kit (toothbrush, razor, etc..). I used the backpack on my first safari and a number of other trips. Works for me.

Nice bags if you're at the gym every day. Me? I'm too old. I gotta have wheels, the castering type. I ain't carry nothin' two miles through an airport. :p:D YMMV.

Tortuga makes some great travel/carry on bags. we did 14 days in Italy out of two bags!
but I normally use my hunting backpack when hunting is the destination.

I use a filson carry on and a mountain hardware backpack gets me everywhere I need to go.

This is all my stuff I take for a 10 day Africa hunt.
I had always carried a Camelback Hawg, but decided to try something different my last trip. I bought a 5.11 Rush 24. It worked well having lots of pockets to organized items in. I think a daypack is the way to go for me.
What I carry on is my vest, fleece jacket and daypack.
The vest contains the most critical items such as money, passport, pen, notepad, WetWipes, Kleenex, 4457, SAPs paperwork, cellphone, earbuds, meds, glasses, travel toothbrush & paste unless I am on a flight that furnishes one, etc.
The daypack contains voltage adapter, cellphone/iPad charger, 1 change of clothes (underwear, socks, shirt, pants), iPad, copies of all paperwork, spare glasses, binoculars, range finder, camera, etc.

I am trying to decide on a new carry on for my upcoming safari. I'll have 5 flights each way including a charter into camp. I have been trying to decide on a new bag, my current one won't meet international size requirements. I have been leaning toward the Red Oxx Skytrain but wanted to ask the frequent flyers what they prefer.
I have a new 5.11 backpack that is fantastic. It has so many pockets that are very well designed. It has a sunglasses pocket, two small pockets perfect for my passport and wallet that are easily accessable, then then two typical size outside zipper pockets that I keep my iPad, chargers, reading glasses, etc in, and a large interior compartment. See I want a backpack as my carry on so I can roll my checked bag and gun case myself with no help. If I had a roller bag carry on I am not sure how I would manage. I have been traveling this way very comfortably this way for some time now and it just works! I like my 5.11 backpack as a carry on so much I don’t want to get it too dirty hunting so I bought their single sling day pack (not sure what it is called) to take on he truck each day hunting and that has been the best thing ever. It is just the right size for binos, shells, and anything else for the day.
Check out 5.11 online or at Cabelas.
Regards,
Philip

Looking at them, there are a few different models. Which one are you using?
I strap my carry-on to the top of my checked bag with one of these below so I have one roller and my gun case. I use it differently than in the video and it keeps the top bag tight.

I’ve been using a North Face Solaris 40 for almost 15 years at this point... it’s been an amazing pack... I’ve literally taken it on hundreds of international trips and who knows how many domestic flights so far.. and it’s still going strong...

It can easily take on a heavy load and be carried comfortably (thick, soft shoulder straps and waist belt).. is big enough to fit a lot of stuff, while still meeting carry on limitations.. and it’s very compartmentalized, which makes keeping kit organized easy..

I’m sitting in a hotel in Cusco, Peru typing this, with the Solaris sitting next to me..

If/when this pack ever dies I hope North Face is still making it.. I’d buy another one immediately... it’s been bar none the best carry on/pack I have ever owned..

Edited to add: I didn’t mention how rugged the Solaris is, and should have...

I’ve taken this pack to South Sudan almost 2 dozen times.. it’s been to Iraq at least 10-12 times.. it’s been to Afghanistan several times.. etc etc.. some of the worst conditions you can expose a pack to.. and it’s still as good as the day I bought it...

@dave West, WOW! That's a hell of an endorsement. I've had equipment like that, bulletproof, long lasting and discontinued. The newer models are cheaper made, don't last as long and cost more money. It's one of those items, if you knew then what you know now, you'd have bought two of them.:D

I got an Eddie Bauer duffle because I fly in planes that roller bags don’t fit pretty often. It’s weatherproof, folds into itself if you need to save space later, it’s light and it’s been bulletproof. So far I love it. Took it to Africa and Argentina as my carry on and then a small backpack. Worked really well.

Sorry Dave they no longer make it. This is typical with many products including boots and trail type shoes. When you find one and buy it over and over, the maker will stop making it and produce a new and improved one. And in my experience, the new one is hardly ever as good at the old one. My thinking is that the maker just learned how to produce more cheaply and it usually shows!

Thanks for all the input! I decided to go with the Red Oxx Skytrain, I think it will work well without being too big and bulky. I'm flying KLM all the way so I can check my bags through to Kilimanjaro from St. Louis.

Damns!!!!!!

I hope I get 10 more years out of the one I have then... it’s seriously one of the best 3 or 4 pieces of kit I have bought in my life... it has served me very well over the years...
