Farm Murders

With the OP only having two posts, I am wondering if this was just a deterrent method for future potential hunters and just a means to stir the pot. Not saying that is what he is doing, but there is zero relevance to what his post is stating. Nothing at all to back it up.

Thanks everyone for your comments very helpful! Just want to make sure we aren’t heading across the world and getting into something scary!

Just trying to gain information on the hunting lots of stories floating in the media which you can’t always trust but I am very new to hunts out of country and want to make sure safety comes first. Now one needs to get themselves in danger when it can be avoided.
Thanks for your comments

I attempted to research this uptick in farm murders you mentioned and also attacks on safari outfits and there wasn't anything pointing to that taking place. You will be fine and probably safer there than multiple places here.

I would rate Zim as the safest hunting destination, simply because the land question is settled.
Settling the land question has resulted in economic collapse and mass starvation. Consequently, things are now much more "unsettled" in Zimbabwe than when the white landowners made it the breadbasket of Africa. The "answer" has created the problem.

I agree with all of the above..

Stay out of "bad" areas... and the risk level is as low, or lower than many/most places in the US..

A farm where bad guys know that there are numerous armed people running around isnt a priority target... if bad guys do decide to attack a game farm while there are hunters on the property, their victim selection process is clearly flawed and they should probably have their predator cards revoked..

Ive taken my wife and children to South Africa and felt perfectly secure.. Im taking my wife and one of our children back to South Africa again in July... in addition to going to the NW Province to hunt for a week, we're going to spend a week in Cape Town on our own.. I've rented a car.. we'll self drive everywhere we want to go.. we're in a hotel down near the water, will be driving all over the city, out into the rural areas around the city, etc.. and I am 100% comfortable in doing that..

Just take the right precautions, make sure you have an idea where the places you need to avoid are, and act responsibly.. and chances are far better that you and your family will be safer, than if you were spending the same amount of time in Chicago, DC, Detroit, or Memphis...

FWIW, I am a former major metro area cop and former soldier.. I have worked in the "security" industry in one way, shape or form for the better part of the last 30 years... I am extremely security conscious... and again, have zero concerns about taking my wife and kids to South Africa right now...

At the Joberg Airport in 2021 I noticed new murals on some of the corridor walls. One depicted visitors on a photo safari in Kruger Park. Well okay, that makes sense. Next one invites tourists to tour the Townships. Yep. Lovely young white couple bicycling through rustic shops on clean streets. My jaw about hit the floor. When my PH picked me up I told him what I'd seen. He was EXTREMELY alarmed. My trip last year I saw no murals. All walls appeared to have been painted over with dull green. I'm guessing some uninitiated tourists actually attempted the Townships tour and met with disastrous results.

Just got back from a trip with Kuche. At no point did I ever feel unsafe. Even leaving and coming back to J-Burg airport I didn't really feel that unsafe. The highway basically fast-tracks you right out.

Targeting a group of hunters/PH's who are carrying high powered rifles doesn't seem all that logical to me. As others have mentioned, these incidents are likely targeting farm owners/workers. Not to mention, Kuche is pretty much its own compound. When I was in camp there were quite a few others. I imagine someone would likely need to have tried to do something with basically a small-army.

I've been to Bogota, Rio De Janeiro, Acapulco, the Venezuelan border in Colombia, and a couple other lovely locales. RSA was way far up the spectrum of unsafe places. Not quite suburban USA but no where near the worst I've seen.

It's sad this isn't a given. I completely agree. Furthermore, if someone finds themselves in a "bad" area in RSA they really must have tried quite hard to get there and/or have nothing in the way of brains. Not exactly like a metro area similar to Detroit, Bogota, Rio De Janeiro, etc.

the Venezuelan border in Colombia
Maracaibo, and the entire Zulia state are (were) my absolute favorite places in Venezuela..

Its been a long time since I have been there (my last visit was early in Chavez's presidency, prior to him deciding that he hated the US and him turning toward the communist/socialist system(s) that have completely destroyed that country)..

No clue what it looks like today.. but in the late 2002 time frame, it was absolutely beautiful (albeit a bit dangerous with all of the Colombian groups like FARC, ELN, etc. running back and forth across the border routinely)..

@Bostmeyer We just spent the month of March in South Africa. Hunting sure, but also going into small and large towns for shopping, eating, a couple of touristy things, seeing what it’s like to live in South Africa. We stayed in everything from farm houses on working farms, to tented camps, a hotel in Sun City, and a couple of luxury hunting lodges. I also drove one of the two vehicles during the entire trip. I’ll say this, yes SAP can suck, but no worse than law enforcement in the US or Canada, and just as useless. All the people we met, no matter their station in life or color, treated us kindly and with respect, and with a smile on their face. Much better than in North America. Go have fun and enjoy yourself.

We were on the Colombian side. We left out of Puerto Gaitan and made our way up to just SW of Bucaramanga. The touch and go part was the Guahibo tribe area. They had their own LE and jurisdiction over the area. We were warned there had been paramilitary in the area in months prior. It had been a back in forth in that region between various left and right wing groups. As pretty much was the story there for most people's lifetimes. I loved it but it was quite touch and go in certain areas. Most of the drug-related stuff is in that region near the border. Also, at that time, the big immigration push into Colombia started.

I was very young when I saw the pre-Chavez Venezuela. It's amazing to see what that country was and what it is now. Never saw it from the inside but saw the affluence of the country while in Aruba. The big spenders at the time were the Venezuelans and the Dutch. I went back a few years ago and now it is all Americans and Dutch. Venezuelans can't afford to vacation there now for the most part. People here would do good to study up on the history of the country.

....WTF? A Walmart in Idaho where everyone has a gun under their shirt is nearly the safest place on earth, second only to a gun show in ID or MT, where everyone has a gun under their shirt AND several on the table.
+1. I carry CCW almost everywhere here in Colorado, especially if I have to go to Denver (God forbid! LOL). I see some people open carrying in Wal Mart and the grocery store. Not my choice, but they're not criminals and NOT the ones you have to worry about. It's the bandits carrying their stolen guns concealed bent on robbing or carjacking you in the parking lot.

The problem in countries which don't allow their law abiding citizens to carry firearms for protection, is that KNIFE wielding assailants (who don't need guns) commit their same crimes unhindered. As an example, London has a HORRIBLE murder rate with criminals using knives. If you're a criminal there, why bother with the time and energy getting a firearm, when your hapless victims are COMPLETELY unarmed? You never hear those stats from our left wing media here, but look them up. The police are great at solving crimes LATER, but there are NEVER and will be NEVER enough of them in the right place at the right time when you're getting robbed, raped, assaulted, car jacked and/or murdered. Especially now, with their budgets and manpower in the toilet, thanks to the Marxist BLM and defund the police BS! I'll stay armed and free from being a victim!

Good point Brickburn. How many here have been murdered on your farms? LOL

You would be in more danger if you visited New York, Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, or LA, but farm murders are going on, despite what a Google search tells you.

Leave JNB as soon as you can, but you should be fine when you get to your safari property.

The staff of your safari company won't be SEAL team 6, but they can probably be the South African equivalent.

I would not worry about it and just enjoy the hunt.

But, if you are very concerned about it, use Global Rescue with their mercenary option.

If you are intrested in reading about it there is a book called Kill the Boer and it tells all about the Farm Murders and has statistics. Mostly attacked elderly farmers never mentioned game ranches

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
