Fallow Deer in Limpopo

They were introduced to Australia in Northern Territory same area as banteng but would be as close as you’ll get now to where they are native.
Townsend @Bob Nelson 35Whelen hunted them in OZ and posted a photo here once. They're almost as large as the elk here.

Sambar are now a problem in Victoria. The DSE estimates there's a million deer in Victoria alone of different varieties.

I knew there were a lot of fallow there but didn’t realize there were sambar too. Have you taken one? It’s a really unique deer species.

Edit: I found your sambar photo. That’s really cool deer. It’s a neat opportunity you have even if they are technically a problem.

I wouldn't.

One, it's not fair chase.
Two, it's way more expensive than hunting them in their native ranges in Europe.
Three, their meat is nothing to write home about.

It's no different than shooting a zebra in TX.

(1) There are lots of places in the Texas Hill Country where they are “free range” that is low or no fenced.
(2) not sure about cost
(3) the best game meal that I have eating was Fallow in Prague. Better than North American Elk.

Regarding the meat, I’ve always thought the meat of a fat young doe or stag is really excellent. Lots of fat on it and almost no game or wild taste. Trying to eat a stag during the rut is a different story. Keep the trophy and let the farm labour keep the meat, or if you have a dog with very little self respect, make pets mince out of the entire carcass.

He was an old stag with malformed antlers. The farmer estimated his age at 9 or ten years old. Hung him for a week before butchering him, vac packed and put in the fridge for 14 days then frozen. Excellent TENDER eating. Shot with my SMLE No4 Mk2 in 444 marlin. Loaded with 264gn flex tips at 2,500fps at 170 yards. A bit to much gun but deed is deed.

I can highly recommend southern Austria.
Well as an Austrian first of all thanks for mentioning :-)

For an exceptional Fallow Deer hunt choose Hungary, especially Southern-Eastern Budapest area or Southern Hungary.

The rut there used to be incredibly good with hundreds of animals. It's quite an experience standing more or less in the middle of that... and it's pretty loud

You make a valid point. This Austrian stag came from the Punitzer Wald on the Austrian Hungarian border. He may have had a Hungarian passport.

So you hunted the property of Mr. Draskovich I assume :-) Or near his area at least.

A large property still belonging to Batthyany family near the town of Gussing. It is leased by Martin Neuper's FN Hunting.

1-Can you point me a place in Hill country where there's consistent real free range Fallow deer hunting?
There are some on the Edwards Plateau outside confinement but not in reliable hunting numbers.
2-Every animal in TX costs a lot more than to hunt them in their free range.
A fallow deer inside HF can be as high as $7K !
3-What you ate was probably a young Fallow hind.

There are some around Guadalupe River State Park. Give them time and their range will expand just like Axis. The State has a drawing for them every year.

Aoudad/Barbary sheep were native to Spain hundred of years back, they disappeared, and were reintroduced about 60 years ago from Morocco, now they are thriving in Murcia, SE Spain.

Yet, I hunted mine in the Northern Cape of RSA, an arid landscape, similar to their native range. It was´nt easy, took me 3days to get the male I wanted. At a much better price than a similar trophy would cost me in Spain.

Some animals are nowadays impossible to hunt in their native range, Morocco does not allow hunting them, Sudan, well, never mind, so, to me it´s fine to hunt reintroduced species.

I would'nt waste your money hunting a fallow in SA. Rather head to Europe and do it right.

I agree however they have to be free range, born in the wild and not put and take.

Hunting is not a waste of money.....
Hunting is not but there are a lot of people who think they're hunting...
