Extra 75 gr or a few more FPS Buffalo arrow?

On a side note I would beware of a certain oft mentioned company that markets Broadheads - I have seen more than one complaints over the years with failures.

Here is the most recent failure (posted from another site) that resulted in a lost buff for a few days til put down with rifles.

Broadhead integrity is fundamental, and a broken ferrule won’t cut it

I actually had a similar break on a broadhead back in 2019 but I also hit a spine on a blue wildebeest at an extreme quartering shot and I was not really surprised by that. Of course, I didn't lose my bull or even misplace him for a while. I simply put another arrow in him and was done. Sucks to have to rifle an animal on a bow hunt. Been there, don't want to keep being there but know it will happen from time to time - usually or always my fault when it does happen so far.

That is the best idea I have heard. I need to build two arrows, one 75 grains lighter than the other. Then, I need to hunt TWO buffaloes and see which one is more effective.
Then write up a really good test comparison article. Id read it.

Here is a link- As a warning the Post is not about this failure in particular, but part of a complaint against an outfitter with how a hunt ended up.

I shot my buff with an Iron Will 250 gr single bevel first, then the follow up shots were with a VPA penetrator double bevel. The VPA is very similar to the Cutthroat, made in the same factory I hear. The Iron will penetrated 4-5 inched deeper than the VPA on an 800 gr arrow.

My buddy used the 200 gr Iron Will double bevel and got more penetration with a 700 gr arrow twice. I think there is a max efficiency for KE and MO based on your bows poundage- and its a bit lower than commonly recommended since modern compounds are so much more efficient.

Based on this small sample size I would say the following- 70# bow with a 700 gr arrow, 80# bow with a 800 grain arrow.

here is the link- Look at about July 5 for the failure and the recommended heads - I guess a link to another site is not permitted? it was on a popular bowhunting site under KMS buffs hitting the salt started in May

I guess we are not allowed to link to that website. It was blacked out in my thread alert email and the link isn't even in your reply. Still interested in the story now but I don't know where I would need to go and find it to read about it...

Thanks to all. PSE Levitate 28” draw length @ 75#. Have an Athens Vista 35 but decided I’ll take the Levitate as it is lighter and a much faster bow.

FYI I can tune either, so flight will not be an issue. Also have not noticed any flight difference using either 3 or 4 fletch at 40 yds - TAC Matrix 2.25” or for that matter TAC Driver 2.75’ (the Matrix are a shade taller).

I would not worry about the extra 75gr insert. Realistically you would only gain 55 grains since the standard aluminum insert is about 20 gr.

Next arrow build I do for buff will probably be about 750gr with an Iron Will or a Helix broadhead.

Did you sharpen the VPA well or just shoot it as it came out of the package?

I did sharpen the VPA. When I get a chance I will post a picture of the heads. The VPA is a bigger head, even though the cutting diameter is similar. The Iron Wills come scary scalpel sharp and hold the edge forever

Here are the two heads, same weight. The iron Will penetrated better. My buddy with the lighter arrows and iron wills got slightly more penetration than I did with 800gr. The buffs were similar size (43” and 44” )

I was planning to take the 300 grain VPA single bevel, but so far have been unable to put an edge in them that I’m satisfied with. Contemplating a switch to the iron wills

You won’t be disappointed, other than price . Very tight tolerances. Very sharp, especially double bevel. But they also hold the edge like crazy
