Experience with multi caliber drillings?

I’m familiar with the regulation of double rifles with the same caliber but not in different calibers. The one in question is a 22 hi-power x 22lr x 20ga. Is it reasonable to expect that the long rifle and hi-power are regulated at different ranges? Perhaps 25/50m for the lr and 100m for the centerfire? I have both Norma and RWS ammo for the HP. I thought I would zero it at 50 or 100 and try various 22lr ammo to find one that closely regulates. Seem reasonably or another approach that you would use? It’s a German gun so I thought I’d start with both RWS center and rimfire. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks.

That one is a strange combination of calibers.

I guess, a 5,6x52R for chamois or roe deer, a 22LR for rabbits, and a 20 gauge for birds.

Thanks for this! I can figure it out when I shoot it, but any ideas of what the “K” and “KL” on the selector stand for?

K= Kugel (Bullet / Centerfire)
In the rear Position is schould show a S for Schrot (Shot) or maybe KL for klein (little)

Normally drilling selecter switches will be pushed forward for the bigger catridge / centerfire.
That inherits from the older drilling which flipped up the rar sight with a connecting rod when the Centerfire Catridge was selected.



This is called a Niederwilddrilling.
Niederwild is the german term for Roedeer and lighter Game species and can be taken with 5.6mm / .223 and bigger.
Hochwild requeres 6.5mm (.257) and bigger caliber with 1500ft/lbs + at 100 meters

I certainly wouldn't expect the 22 lr to be regulated at 100m, probably 25 or 50m. I would make a copy of my target for at the bench and note where each shot lands. I would think this will take some Kentucky windage also. Just remember to note for each barrel and where it hits with a cold bore shot , for each barrel, then a shot fired from say the main barrel and then the 22lr barrel and again for the 20ga barrel. As each different barrel is shot and other barrels are shot, the different shot placments will move, it is a good idea to keep all this written down in a small notebook, to carry with you when in the feild. I imagine that this particular set up will have a definite learning curve to it. Let us know how it turns out.

One other question, what kind of reticle is in the scope? That maybe a clue as how it was originally set up.

Looks like an older fixed Power Zeiss or S&B so my guess would ne No 1, Diavari or maybe No 4.

Remove the fore-end, unhook the barrels, and the caliber data should be next to the proof mark, etc.

Should be a .22 Savage Hi-Power, also known as 5.6×52mmR Savage in europe.

That wierd .228 cal rimmed thing.

Yes 5,6x52R (22 Savage high power) is a common drilling and combination gun cartridge. Even today you can get a Blaser D99, D14, or B97/95 in this caliber. Probably a Merkel or Krieghoff as well.

You can not currently get a K95 in this caliber.

I see no seams of an insert. So my guess would be no.

If it is a insert, it's installed to be permanent, look at the extractor, compared to other inserts. It's a full extractor, off the main one, including the small rim lift. Very nicely done. The inserts I have seen, are not like this and the little extractor is screwed to the main shotgun extractor and fit into a little slot. I could be wrong, but it looks like it was built this way.

The proof marks tell the story--place of proof house, caliber, bullet weight, date of manufacture, shotgun shell length and anything which would prove that a workman had touched it for their contribution to the work (tube knitters, etc. that wanted to get paid).
AS A FAVOR TO THE OP: I will give up my stash location for brass, since I probably won't being buying a gun in this caliber....Ray's Hardware and Sporting Goods in Dallas, Tx has 5 or 6 boxes of 5.6x52R new Norma brass marked for $23 per box. I would buy it at that price and not haggle or they might just look up replacement cost. It is on a lower shelf next to other metric calibers in their phased out reloading section. You're welcome.

These look like a great idea for county's where multiple species may be encountered & on license at the same time of year, we can't take Shotguns or Rimfires onto public hunting grounds in NZ I think to preclude hunters from shooting Native birds, it was common for indigenous folks to shoot our Native Pigeons to near extinction !

A nice Drilling or Vierling would be great walk around Gun in parts of Africa .

I just bought last week a Krieghoff Einstecklauf 12ga barrel insert in 22mag, inserted into the only shotgun that I had with sights, my H&R rifled shotgun, shot this with the open sight at 30yds using RWS cartridges, unfortunately only had a few & it is not as good with the Winchester ?

Sarg, I saw a drilling with a nitro express barrel (can't remember the caliber) at a gun show and thought it was out of my price. A fellow bought it, then advertised it for over two grand more! It was absolutely pristine....sigh
