I don't believe .30-30 has any military aspirations and there is the aforementioned .375 H&H. As I am primarily a bird hunter (doves, quail, pheasant and chukar mostly) I would add the 20 gauge - a chambering to which I am becoming more partial each season.

5.6x57's parent would be the 7x57 so militarily derived?
7x64 (and the 8x64) was actually developed by Brenneke with the Wehrmacht in mind but they decided they didn't want it, so, are those 2 "military" cartridges? (Great chamberings in any event, I love my 7x64).

Ive had a 5,6x57 before ,so experience that in reform. But 74 grain 3400 fps factory load it has was nifty.

Several were experimenting with 5mm and 6 and up,based on the allied forces saw of the 6mm Lee Navy in use in China ,that they went so much study into a 6mm for them is not surprising.

And as Ian on Forgotten Weapons said on a film of his regarding that rifle.

In short Louis Schelmilch who were behind Gew 88 were the one behind this one, and it had been some troubles with Gew 88. But then it was Spandau vs Mauserwerke so the contest flipped to Mauser in the 1896 competition, 2 years later history took another turn.

Same with the 20ish Spandau rifles also ,most went to Kaiser and friends of his,but they were used much by them.

Of the rifles I currently own, I would be satisfied hunting most anything with three non-military cartridges: .222 Remington ( small game, varmints, furbearers and game up to Roe Deer size) 7x64 (all normal hoofed game, and predators, but not including dangerous game) And .450-400 3" Nitro Express OR .375 H&H because I find it difficult to choose between my double rifle and a bolt action for the Very big/Dangerous game.

22lr for varmint control within 100 yards. 300WM for larger varmints up to Elk sized game. 375H&H for Eland, Moose, Bear and above.

The obvious gap is between 22lr and 300WM and if a really good deal were to materialize on a R8 257WBY barrel...I'd have to seriously consider it. Until then I'm perfectly content with what I have.

You really need a good 25 mate. Either a 25-06 or a 257 Weatherby. You are missing out a lot of great hunting not having a fast 25.
Mount a nice Meopta 3.5-10 x44 with a bdc reticle. Load 100gn TTSXs at 3,600fps sighted 2.5 inches high at 100 and go and shoot shit with a dead on hold to 350 yards and depending on the size of the game a backing hold on white tail deer to 450 yards.
Hang the expense mate just do it and broaden you're horizons.

Isn't the 300 Win Mag also a sniper round? What about 257 Roberts, 300 H&H and the 404 Jeffery?

The .300 Win Msg was developed and marketed as a hunting round many years before the military added it to their arsenal in some sniper rounds.
