Excellent new discussion by Kevin Robertson of all Safari Cartridges 0.50cal and up.

I've spoken at length wit Dr. Robertson about the 505 Gibbs back when I owned one. He was very knowledgeable and willing to help me figure the cartridge out.

I will tag this for listening, when I have more time.

I never thought I’d view my 500NE as “small”
Modern gun powder and bullets have made most of the big boys somewhat obsolete... But they are still out there!

The cult of the large bore is small but not gone!

Just goes to show how many heavy hitters are available above the 500NE, a cartridge that many consider a heavy hitter.

Some of these just seem excessive like the 577 Trex, 600 Overkill etc.

Those two are only excessive if you load them hot. They are likely more commonly loaded to NE levels for hunting. I have a 585 HE that can be loaded even hotter than the 577 T-Rex, but it's not something I care to do often. A bolt action 600 OK is worlds less expensive than a 600 NE double rifle!

All of the smokeless big boys are positively tiny compared to the old black powder dangerous game rifles! But obviously the smokeless guns are more powerful.
