Elk Rifle

This past November I used my Christensen Arms Ridgeline in 28 Nosler on a 6x6 elk in Idaho. Has a Huskemaw 5x25x50 Blue Diamond scope, shooting factory 160 grain Accubonds. Worked great. Previous rifle was a Browning A-bolt in 300WM with a Vortex Viper 5x25x50 scope, shooting 200 grain Nosler Partitions. Any of the 7mm or 30 caliber magnums will get it done on elk.

That’s a hell of a picture!

Buy a Benelli Lupo in 300 WM, scope it with a Leupold 2-12 and enjoy a low purchase price, light weight, better accuracy than $5000 rifles, and go kill an elk
Concur, love my lupo. Available in wood and smooooth. Did I say I love it!

My go to rifle is a 8mm Rem Mag. It’s better than any .30 cal, in my opinion, under 600yds and is almost as good as a 340Wby. In fact I would have a 340Wby if I didn't already have a 8mm Rem Mag. The only downside with a 8mm Rem mag is, it is pretty much a hand loader's cartridge. But man it packs a punch.
Just bought a 325 WSM Winchester Model 70 in stainless steel and Bell & Carlson stock. Picked up some 198 grain Hammer bullets to load for it.

What bullets are you shooting in your 8 Rem Mag?

Seem to always be hunting elk in short range situation my go to elk rifle caliber since 1990 is a model 70 35 whelen AI, black stock, sworski glass 225 gr. bullets sub. minute past 200 yds. close to 3000 fps

If after elk, I generally grab my Tikka T3 in 270 Win shooting 140 gr accubonds or 140 Trophy bonded tips, or one of my Rem 700 280 Rem’s shooting 145 gr LRX or 150 Partitions. We hunt mostly in semi open or canyon country, and occasionally still hunt moderately open woods. Shots vary from bow range to about 400 yards.

In the beginnig I shot 220gr SGK and got around 2900fps. Then I used 200gr TSX at around 3070fps. The past couple of years I’ve been using 198gr Hunter Hammers. My best accuracy has been around 3025-3050fps. All of them have worked well.

I prefer something light weight (9lb. loaded w/scope) in a 30 cal magnum or 7mm magnum. I prefer a 2x12x44mm with some sort of target turret for the elevation. I also prefer that the rifle holds a .5, one shot POI, cold bore shot, at various temperatures with or without suppressor. I would like to have a 165-225 grain controlled expansion bullet like the Barnes TSX.

Currently I use a Fierce Carbon 7 PRC and a Bergara 300 PRC. I also use a Savage .308. 7 and .308 are carbon and meet the weight requirements. The 300 is 'just' slightly over it, but.....I get over it.

These 3 rifles will do anything I need anywhere I go. I could sell everything else except the 375 and 416. But...I'm a rifle nut and I keep the legacy heavy stuff for the occasional hunts.

My two cents. When I was first starting to look at an Elk hunt, all the outfitters in Montana told me I needed a 300WinMag, so I bought one (it's still new in box). I called a New Mexico outfitter and he said my 308Win was more than enough, and he was right, dead elk. In fact, it also killed without a problem a large Red Stag in Croatia too. Don't buy into the must "have" caliber. The only must have is really a 375 in Africa, in case you run into something you were not expecting and want to make sure you have a legal caliber.

I have been looking at the Tikka TX# ultra light in .300 win

Great choice of cartridge and rifle. I have had good luck with Tikka and love smoothness of the action when you cycle the bolt.

I would also recommend a Tikka Veil Alpine which is cerakoted, threaded and comes with a muzzle brake which you can practice with and take off while hunting, a Tikka Lite, or a T3x laminated stainless. All three of these weigh an extra 0.3 kg, 0.66lb, placing them just under 7 lbs before optics, sling and ammo. They also have slightly longer barrels than the superlite.

My 300 PRC weighs about 9.4 lbs with scope and sling. It’s a nice weight for a 300 magnum. I would recommend a total rifle weight of between 8.5 to 9.5 lbs for recoil mitigation and steadiness of shooting. To each their own, however…

Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
