There are differences between legal and ethical. The legal minimum is often a compromise to ensure that a suitable rifle, that everyone should normally be able to handle, is used. The .44 is legal - they abolished the min case length some time ago when the WSM's hit the market...
My hunting mate (although I don't agree) uses a .357 on deer - including Sambar.

I've probably killed close to 20 elk with Berger bullets. They really do a great job of taking elk down quickly and cleanly. All that said, I've started carrying 2 loads. Bergers for long range work and something harder (Accubonds, Partitions, Barnes, etc.) for timber work. Some Bergers can be a bit splashy up close. Alternatively, harder bullets can fail by not maintaining enough velocity to expand properly at long range. Range is what it is. People can get bent out of shape over people shooting what they consider to be too far, and everyone agrees that at a certain point, a different distance for everyone, longrange hunting becomes a stunt and that it's simply wrong to shoot at an animal from whatever distance. The exact same can be said about shooting at running animals at practically any distance. Also, I'm not a fan of using small calibers to kill large animals, especially at long range.

I see this was posted a few years ago, somebody recently commented on this post so here it is. Shooting at an elk at this distance and with this round means you are beyond gay. This is so ignorantly wrong, the only way you can support this is if another man is putting his Johnson in your nether worlds. This cannot be justified, if you see this as cool then you are a problem. Thanks and enjoy your weekend.

We dont see the footage of the F*** Ups! That was a spine shot. A few inches lower and the shot was (another) lost wounded animal.

Let's keep the long range shooting for target shooting and not killing animals. They never show when they blow off a leg and the animal hobbles away. Long range hunting is disgusting, where did bushcraft and hunting skills go. It's not that they are such good shots, the tech is all laid out for them with their multi purpose laser range finders and turret knobs. Without someone else to figure out all the dope for them with the technology, they wouldn't be doing this. DISGUSTING.

Exactly my thought. One small.elk step after the trigger breaks, one errant puff of wind, and a fine animal escapes to die in pain and maybe never recovered. An unethical stunt.

That has always been my opinion. Sure we see videos and hear stories where the animal (any species) was recovered... How many hundreds (thousands?) of animals die a slow painful death or walk away wounded. With the shooter saying, "I must have missed."
