Eland

Thanks a lot Ridgewalker and 458! I was gonna post a picture of my eland until you guys posted those toads.....damn........:D.....................FWB

Well, the 145gr SH out of the 270WSM has plenty of SD so should have good penetration. But, the 225gr SH out of the 338 Federal is not overkill either and also not much room for error for eland. A big bull is very big and can be very hard to stop! Even the 375 and 416 Mags with good bullets are not overkill. Shoot straight

That's my dream eland right there! Congrats mate

Just abbreviation for Sledge Hammer as referenced by Michael Dean's post

Any recommendations on outfitters that offer/specialise in tracking mature eland bulls in Namibia or RSA?

I am just coming off a phenomenal hunt with @KMG safaris where I took an awesome eland. Better pictures coming when I get home and can do a proper report, but I highly recommend them

Was that spot and stalk or tracking type hunt? They're one of the names that keep coming up.

This was a spot and stalk, actually several, until we were able to connect.

I am still kicking myself for not prioritising a tracking hunt in the Kalahari for eland when I was there. We tracked zebra, giraffe and gemsbok for hours, mostly unable to catch-up - and it was awesome! I want to fix that someday!

I also like the looks of the cat-and-mouse games with eland in those huge Eastern Cape mountains like the Stormbergs.

One thing I’ve learned about eland having only caught glimpses of them is that they’re not stupid. They’re properly switched-on.

None of that sounds bad to me!

I've always loved tracking more than any other form of hunting. Cut my teeth tracking reds through thick stuff as a yougin. Problem down here is the small parcel sizes, but somewhere you can chase them all day like in the kalahari sounds bloody mint!

I reckon for me no matter how many trips I do to Africa I'll always try to chase eland.

That eastern cape style hunting reminds me a bit of sambar or sika hunting from what I've seen in video's. Whole other kind of challenge but just as fun I'm sure.

I've heard more than a few say they're switched on and can burn would be pursuers off when they need to.

If you want to track wild eland, with all the highs and lows that it can offer, I like Elandpro.................as the name implies, it is their specialty. About 70 km east of Grootfontein. Justus Brits of Afrihunts does spot and stalk from Kopjes in an area near Otavi. These are both in Namibia. They were my final two choices after two years of planning. Went with Gerrit Breedt of Elandpro. No regrets. Best of luck whatever you choose..................FWB

I had a great tracking hunt in Botswana last year. Small outfit, very limited hunts on a 60 square mile property in the Kalahari.

Hello JPbowhunter,

If you have time to look up a post of mine on tracking eland in The Kalahari (includes photos), the article can be found in the forum country by country subject matter of Namibia or perhaps faster to locate by looking into my Thread beginning specifically on Sept 17, 2017, titled as follows:

Namibia’s “Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris”

It was written under my screen name of Velo Dog.
However, it was a 14 day safari for multiple species so, you can skip to Page 4, to just read the eland portion and see those specific pictures.

Most of our hunting is done on our main property (not game fenced / with game migrations each year, etc), up in the Khomas Hochland Highlands of Northern Namibia.
Our concession for eland and some specific other species is however down in the Kalahari region of Namibia.
It is indeed fenced but since it is about 37,000 acres, all in one piece and as rugged as any hunter could want, tracking eland on foot there will give any Hunter all they could ever bargain for.

As a side note here, I agree with others that a .270 caliber, properly tough / bonded core type bullet will, when perfectly placed, put an eland in the salt.
However, my eland report describes why, when the Hunter (me for instance) misses the perfect spot on his huge quarry that, a .375 is so absolutely perfect for the merry chase that surely will follow.

Use enough gun.
Stay physically fit.
With your rifle and shooting sticks, practice, practice, practice .... and then practice some more.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.
