I don't know much about the dwarf forest buffalo yet. I have been to Congo (Brazzaville) last year to observe them. I can say they are like ''water'' buffalo. They like to sit in the stream or in the wet bay for long hours ruminating. They don't go far from the open area. The bobby is very small !!! but as you can imagine they are powerful animal, fast and nervous... I saw one herd of about 30 animals but usually they are about 12 together. The horn shape vary from one to another, backward, upward... quite funny. The bulls are more black than red. They get darker with age I think.
I remember long ago I shot one of those with a 375HH and he ran for about 80 yard. I will use this caliber again, I don't really want to look for this fast fury in the tropical rain forest....

Please share some pictures.
Christophe

Ox Peckers are in fine form..

Thanks for sharing some great images Christophe.

Beautiful! Helped my morning along nicely.

Yes it is unusual to see those buffaloes... very interesting.
Note the different horn shape of the bulls.
Look at the picture n°15, the bull on the right is a monster…

As all buffaloes you can get very close. They also come on the call but as good as the other species. I think it is because there is no lion. Predators are leopard and hyena only.

I know it old post, but I was admiring the dwarf forest bluff and saw the comment about no lions. I can say with first hand knowledge that where we were hunting in the Congo in 1992, there were lions. We were deep in the jungle and would hear them all them time and would see tracks along animals trails. This was in the Mbomo District near Likoiuala River.
