colorado you wont find too many people on this forum who have 400 rounds of experience with a scoped 500. few people seem to have rifles this big and even fewer put scopes on them. i think the 500 NE 3" is probably the most common in the 500 family and most dont scope their doubles. (though i could be wrong :cautious:)

personally i dont know why more people dont have bolt guns chambered for the 500 Jeffery and 505 Gibbs. they are much more affordable then a double in 500 NE if you buy a non-custom rifle like the CZ 550 (around $3000) or Montana Rifle Company's DGR (around $2000). custom rifles on the other hand seem to run at about the same price as base model Merkel doubles.

Hi Matt, I learned to rifle shoot with a scope, so I'm most comfortable with one, even with the 500 Jeffery. I used to hunt rabbits and squirrels with an open sighted 22 LR rifle so I like open sights as well. I practice with both. I agree with you that the Montana Rifle and CZ 550 are good bargains in the 500s as long as you price in some additional work that most likely will be needed to make them feed and function correctly. Maybe that shouldn't be the case, but if you expect the worst and hope for the best you'll be happier in the long run

What make are those rings and bases on your Weatherby?

Near Manufacturing.

This is the 2-ring Alpha version on my 7mm Wby:

And another version on my .340 Wby:

They all hold the point of aim without any movement I can detect at the range after countless hunts and slogging around.

Thanks for the info, brother. Man those things look stout! And Semper Fi.

One other question: Are all of their Alphamounts (including the 3-ring version) made out of stainless steel? Or aluminum? If steel, they must be heavy and beastly...not necessarily a bad thing with big kickers!

Thanks Shuter. Semper fi!

They are all stainless steel. That's part of the reason I selected the 3-ring one on the .375 Wby--to add a little heft. I can't recall how much the Alpha-mount on the 7mm Wby Ultra Lightweight weighs, but it's not much, and super strong.

Sorry 'Hawk, three more questions: Have you ever weighed the 3-ring mount? Just curious what that much stainless weighs? A buddy wants to sell me his .340 Accumark and I think that mount might be perfect for it.

Do you use the Near Pic rail too? It has an indexing shoulder for recoil that abuts the front of the ejection port, correct?

Finally, what is the sling setup you have that appears to loop around the forend? Looks like that might make carrying a heavy rifle over the tundra semi-tolerable.

Thanks!

No problem Shuter. I just sent Mr. Near an email asking him. If he doesn't respond, I will call him, as I can't recall what the weights are, would like to refresh my memory on that, and I haven't taken any of them off since I originally installed them.

I just have the three setups show above. I'm not familiar with the indexing shoulder concept you mentioned above.

The sling is the Safari Sling that Cabela's sells for $25: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Safari-Rifle-Sling/734604.uts

My AK guide uses them too, and neither of us could prefer anything different. I think I only have a couple of pics handy of what it looks like during real use:

Hope that helps.

Also, that's a .340 Accumark pictured above that took that 71" moose last September. It loves the 225gr CorBon factory ammo, which leaves my barrel at 3,160fps (the more-recently manufactured loads average tightly at a slightly-lower 3,130fps). They're still going around 2,500fps at 350 yds. When I take my time and keep my barrel from getting too hot, I usually can keep my groups with it to between 1/2" and 3/4", and I can't do that with any other rifle I own.

Oh, and another thought. If you're asking about the weight of the 3-ring mount because you're worried that it might be too heavy, the lighter 2-ring mounts are more-than strong enough for the .340 AM. If you're asking because you want to add more weight, I'll let you know when I learn what it is, but you're not going to find a lot of heavier mounts out there.

Thanks! I like the idea of solid steel 3-ring mounts! Yeah, from Near's website, it looks as if his pic rail has a recoil shoulder built into it that indexes on the back of the front receiver ring. Just another little bit of insurance!

I just received the following reply from Mr. Near [with my conversions in brackets]:

.340 Wby Rig: MKV MAG SS rail is 150 Grams [5.3 ounces]. Individual rings I have not made since about 2007 or 2008.

.375 Wby Rig: Black SS MKV MAG rail 150 Grams + LD30MM alphamount = 177 grams = 327 grams [11.5 ounces] total mounts.

.7mm Wby Rig: All In One 30 x44MM Alphahunter mount = 105 Grams [3.7 ounces] total weight with screws !! (My favorite for climbing a mountain or stalking in snow.)

Also, while there are many good options, the three scopes all are Bushnell 6500 Elites. They have not had any recoil-related issues so far and have been great in every other respect. The pictured models are the 1.25-8x32mm (.375), 2.5-16x42mm (7mm), and the 2.5-16x50mm (.340). They're fairly versatile.

Awesome. Thanks much!
