I don’t know anything about ducks. The boys are wanting to try them this year.
I have a buddy that has hunted them some his boy wants to hunt them to.
I have a wet weather branch that opens to a little wet weather pond 800x 60 ruff size maybe 4-6 feet deep in the middle ( run of the branch)
And is arms 4 in deep around the edges when it’s wet.
It’s all most dry now.

I could not find wild rice seed but did find Japanese millet. They told me the jap millet would be ok in the water as long as the plant was higher than the water.
I have only realy planted brown top millet.

Does any one know if the jap will be ok to plant in water?
Will it be ok for duck ? Mostly wood duck and whistling duck with a very few mallard.
( that what I have seen on there over the years)
Any thing else recommended for planting?

It’s realy for a 11-12- and 8 year old to try and get a few.

I am going to throw out some Japanese millet next week on my swamp that’s just now mud flats being exposed. At this time of year that’s the best thing to plant according to my research. You can’t plant it in the water though from what I have seen. It can tolerate flood but the leaves need to be above water line. Needs to grow 2-3 weeks before water covers the base.

Jap millet should be planted on moist soil. If it's dry now or moist whatever the germination and number of days to grow 60?

But once it's planted you put water on it ya. Not fully covered but its base can be submerged. Your neck of the woods its definitely millets. Rice. Sorghums.

If you come through DFW, I would be happy to donate some decoys and gear to your boy’s project.

Thanks

I could not find rice locally and shipping was more than the rice if I ordered it.
I have grown sougram but didn’t know how much wet it could tolerate.

I was thinking of the jap millet all around the edge of the pond.
It’s at the end of the rd and I get run off from the next farm over and the county rd when we get a big rain
It can get a few feet deep quickly and drop back down just as quickly.
It’s clay and sandy loom around the edge for the wet weather pond the bottom of it is more white clay or floriden/ quick sand for no better explanation

That’s the kind / amount of run off

I actually have sougram out in all the fire brake
To help feed the bees and quail and turkeys

There is a seed company in Tampa that has rice, I planted 50# two years ago and the volunteer that has come up the last two years has come back really well.
I’ve also planted Japanese millet and it has done okay.
I’ll see if I can find the name of the seed company, or your local co-op should be able to get it for you on a regular delivery truck at a small cost.

Our local co-op what destroyed by mikle and it’s never opened back.
Actually it got quite a few of the farm/ seed places I had to go to ga to get the jap millet

Greetings guys! For me, Sand Hills Casino is one of the best sites to play online slots in Canada. I enjoy the wide selection of games, and the site runs very smoothly on my phone. Sometimes I just play during breaks, and it’s always entertaining. I can honestly recommend it if you like slot machines.
TY for info!

just seeing this now. i plant a LOT of JM early in the season when soils on hillsides (and the base of hills) are wet...it's not to be planted underwater. it can tolerate water once it's grown (and loves wet soils!) going to plant rice next year (same concept-does NOT like to be underwater as a seed. That's why Asian farmers transplant shoots into flooded/irrigated fields-so the plant is above the water.) The plant cannot get enough air (oxygen, nitrogen) underwater. GL! (You could plant JM on the inside bank of the pond, around the periphery. It'll only get ~3' high.) Deer love it too (young shoots in spring and the seedheads in Fall).

While you do get better germination with traditional plantings you can plant rice in water. In Louisiana they fly rice into around 2” of water. BUT it will NOT germinate if planted and covered with dirt and then flooded before germination it will suffocate then. It is much better if planted get germination and keep about 1/4 of the plant in water. Most of us don’t have the ability to control our water so it’s pretty much a crap shoot.
I may not have any rice left in my paddies for when the teal season starts next month. I got home from Africa Sunday and took a buggy ride back there and about 50 wood ducks and an equal number black bellied whistling ducks back there.
I generally presoak the seed for 36hrs and then let it dry for another 36 and broadcast it at around 60# an acre. But I definitely prefer to spread it on prepared ground drag it lightly and get germination and PRAY for rain.

Hello! I saw your post from last year about a missing crate from your hunt in Moz. I am curious how that all turned out? We (my fiancé and I) also hunted in Moz in 2024 and the trophies are being shipped with Hunters Services Limitada. We have some concerns on whether we will get the trophies home or not. May I ask who you hunted with?
