Does anyone use ear plugs while hunting?

I wish some adult would have lead the way to safer shooting when I was younger.

I do to.

Back when I started shooting, it probably would have been considered a bit wimpish to use hearing protection. I can't remember seeing a pair of ear muffs in a sporting goods store in those days. I was also pretty much a one boy show when it came to shooting and reloading as my parents, relatives and close friends had zero to minimal interest in those things.

I do, I had to deal with alot of occupational hearing testing and after seeing how easy it is to lose it I started taking much better care of my hearing.

I am testing out a pair ofwalkers game ears on my upcoming trip. I'll be sure to include some details on their performance in my hunt report. A little pricy but if they do what they say it'll be worth it.

Jaco,

Which version do you have by EAR? Analog, digital, mini canal, flex canal etc? I was looking into them and they also have a wide range for pricing and options. Thanks.

EJ I have the custom molded digital ones, I also had them add the headphone jack, which end able me to use the on the plane or iPod, the volume is fully adjustable, as mentioned earlier, they also amplify, .... I use them while leopard hunting they help me to pick up cats well before they arrive..

Something I have never been able or would be able to do with my regular hearing..

I hope this helps... :)

My best always.

gday jaco
do you wear them in both ears , while in the blind ?

Bluey, I do yes...it makes it easier for me to hear an approach...

My best always

Absolutely! I have two electronic plugs (Sport Ear Micro-Blast 30's and SelectaFit 30's) - my wife likes the Selecta's better?'m quite happy with the MicroBlast 30's. Either way they are fantastic at letting me hear noise and whispers while allowing me to not worry at all about rifle reports.

On my Goat Hunt I used regular earplugs but that was a bit different. There was plenty of time to line up the shot and get earplugs in.

I won't hunt without plugs of some kind and I consider the e-Plugs to be indispensable.

I used cheap earplugs with the connecting thread which I didn't care if I lost. I'd keep them in just enough to stay in my ear. I could hear and I was able to stay cool & comfortable this way. Then when ready to shoot I'd slip the left one in. I have also used the sponge type plugs. The guns I'm shooting are loud and I really don't want to get deaf or a ringing in my ears. If you look closely at the photos you'll see the left plug.

This is a good thread for those with experience with the amplifying plugs how are they in the wind and what are the life expectancy of these plus I know battery's are interchangeable and I think I've seen some that are rechargeable don't want too be dumping $500 or more on new plugs every couple years thanks for replies

I have used Walker's Game Ears for about 10 years. I wear one in each ear , as it makes locating a sound easier than if only wearing one. I have recently got a new pair of the HD model , and really like them. They take some getting used to , but once I did ...I feel lost without them. One of my most important gear items , without a doubt.

I do a fair amount of bird shooting here in Ireland, pigeon, duck, pheasant and woodcock.
Also do my share of deer stalking. I can no longer shoot without ear defenders, gives me a pain in the head without them.
Looking around at my shooting companions, generally in their 50,s or 60,s a surprising amount of them have hearing aids and virtually all of us now wear some form of hearing protection whilst shooting.
Peltor Sportac,s do it for me.
I wish I had started using them years ago.

I hunted elephant with Luke Samaris in 2005. It was my fourth safari and I tell you he is a fine gentleman the best. I got the opportunity to meet Patty Curtis, although never hunted with him but enjoyed our conversation around our tent in the Selous. Very sad for a tough guy to leave this world the way he did. Let’s pray the murderers are caught. I hope to see Luke in Nashville.
