Does anyone know if an alcohol conviction prohibits travel to South Africa?

South Africa doesn't require a Visa, when it might be asked, and I do not recall ever being asked about anything like that when entering last year. Heck, I don't even recall it being asked about when I rented a car for a week and a half over there. I'm pretty sure you're fine. At worse, contact their Consolate.

One word of advice, for what it's worth. If you are asked at any border post if you have any convictions, you should tell the truth. If they ask, you should assume they can verify. And lying will get you barred more quickly than a conviction. I have a couple of friends who are barred from the US for lying to CBP about previous convictions, even as juveniles, and even if they have received a pardon.

How would they ever know ? It doesn't effect your passport validity. Is there a declaration form (if so I don't remember one) when entering these countries?

Simple questions asked upon entry.
A client was asked if he ever smoked pot.
He answered that he had earlier in his life. He was refused entry into the US.

My brother has been to South Africa numerous times with no problems. I know of others who have also been. Never even heard of it come up as a question until reading these posts.

Cody, you need to revise your sentence slightly, i.e. from "damaged my liver" to pickled my liver ;);)

Thank you all,
I am going to move ahead as a non issue.
I just like to make sure I leave nothing to chance.

There is a major PH/Outfitter in the industry caught in this situation. Minor episode in one country that was supposedly "expunged" that popped on the US system when trying to enter the country. Seems to be virtually no redress upon attempting to "hide" such information.

Exactly. They don’t do a background check!

Come on guys, its South Africa and i don't mean to sound demeaning, Do not contact their consulate. DUI is a minor charge don't should stick in the USA. A lot of us made the same mistake and we still travel where ever we want.
