DIY Hand Rubbed Oil on factory CZ stock

I will be back for another look, this is good,
Anyone with any experience using paint stripper can the checkering etc be cleanly removed and oil the lot?
I did an old .410 TruOil once. It came up smooth well nice, I have a cz550, maybe that will look better with Oil
I use paint stripper & a scrubbing brush then a tooth brush to clean out the checkering, wash with hot water & detergent& let dry for a couple of days, much better than sanding the old finish off.

So I've seen this done with just stripping the finish rather than sanding. What are the advantages of sanding vs just stripping? Filling pores? I think I'm going to try this with 3 of my CZ's.

You can strip the finish with a chemical stripper quite easily. It then needs thorough washing and you will need to sand the surface or use a cabinet scraper. The polyurethane type finish on most rifles will soak into the wood a little and can leave a blotchy surface if you just strip and oil. You will also find the surface pretty rough after stripping but it definitely saves some labour. Instead of sanding, I would recommend using a scraper- Google cabinet scrapers. A cabinet scraper leaves a nicer surface and is easier to work around checkering. Chemical strippers will also clear the checkered, you can just brush off the finish. So use a stripper but you will still need to sand back or scrape the surface and the fill pores etc

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the reply. The pores don't really bother me, but I would of course want the surface finish to be consistent, so would I be sanding with pretty fine stuff? How do you know you've sanded enough?

So I scraped the finish off with a sharp cabinet scraper not stripper. It was pretty easy to see when the finish ends and saw dust/raw wood starts. You probably only need a little sanding with 400 grit after using stripper before going to 600 and finer.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
