Disturbing trend on TV

The outdoor and hunting channels are premium and extra dollars so I don't watch them. From what others have told me they're nothing more than glorified commercials.

Seems every narcissist with a camera, in the age of youtube, thinks they can become a director or producer or star of their own show. Some hire videographers for their "once in a lifetime Africa hunting trip" thinking the same thing. Can't stomach any of it and haven't for 20+ years. And it's not just hunting. I have the same negative reaction to most of the wannabe fishing productions.

Thet removed Outdoor channel from tv distributing here, one of the channels i bothered to see .

These days it is risky to be filmed for the public to watch. Everyone is a critic.

If you have the right job where you’re insulated from the pressure, I say to hell with the anti’s. Easy for me to say since I’m in the hunting industry already.

Morning on the whitetail hunting show, as you see perfectly filmed video of a deer quartering too and the hair puffed at the last rib..... "That was a good hit Good hit. Yea it might be a little far back but... It's a good hit!" "We're going to just give him a little time"... the next morning they find a deer chewed up by coyotes.....

I like This is Africa, Tracks accross Africa. Most of Jim Shockey's stuff but not that BS where they sit in the studio talking. Always liked Under Wild Skies. Rugged Expeditions.

Difficult to stomach most pig and whitetail hunting shows.....
Well stated. Some of these "hunting" shows are just marketing endeavors, staffed by less than savvy hunters.
I HATE it when a "hunter" (poor shooter) shoots a deer, elk, etc. at long range, and just watches and waits for the animal to die from a single, poorly placed shot. They want to advertise "the one shot kill", but it is really the "one shot agony" of a game animal.

I am by no means an expert rifleman. I shoot within my limits. And if the animal is hit, but not down, keep shooting, until he is down. We as hunters must minimize any suffering of the game animal.

Many of today's shows are guys pimping themselves for advertising income.

I kicked DirecTV to the curb years ago.

Lots of good stuff to be found on Youtube. If the channels are monetized, you also have to suffer thru the advertisements, or pay a monthly premium to get rid of the ad's.

I watch less and less of the Outdoor Channel. A few decent shows, but few excite me. What really PO’s me is when someone shoots a deer, primarily bow hunters, and it is obvious that the shot is way back and they pump their clenched fist and yell: “Smoked him!” POS!

Man you are right there!

And I see that drifting into too many hunters and especially guides (outside of Africa). I'm always reloaded and ready to shoot again with or without encouragement. @Just Gina does the same thing. To hell with what anyone else says. We both hate seeing an animal suffer but she agonized over it.

Had my youngest son and his girlfriend on a Texas hunt where she shot an exotic goat. The damned "guide" was high firing her because it fell over. I was on the ground yelling for her to reload and shoot it again. It got up and ran off. Hours later he finally got her back on it to finish it. Big bloated up belly. I'm sure he learned that from TV and my son was taking video so he had to try and ham it up. Idiot. First mistake was he and the outfitter insisted she use their gun. A full size 270. She had a youth model 243 with 100 grain bullets that was her gun and she was a good shot with it. Killed several whitetails in MN with it. It fit her. Excellent example of a smaller bullet put in the right spot would have done wonders compared to giving her something she was unfamiliar with and didn't fit her and resulting in a gut shot.

It’s actually pumping products to pay for the expensive network fee to air the show. That’s why it’s all product ads.

What’s worse is when they shoot a small animal that they otherwise wouldn’t just to get a kill for the show. Then they try to tell you what a great deer it is when everyone knows it’s a dink. Makes me sick.

I watch more YouTube than the hunting shows on cable or streaming services. Most of them are not worth wasting my time on.

Tracks Across Africa still holds my interest. This Is Africa used to be good, but this year not so much. The best show on outdoor television used to be Shockey’s Uncharted. Lots of travel content. Different cultures were highlighted. I think the cost must have gotten prohibitive. I am bored by the deer hunting shows. Totally repetitive.

I swear that when I still was wanting to go to Africa for the first time - and not actually sure I'd ever be able to afford it - it seemed like every other show, 24-7, was about Africa.

Now that I have been, and would like to catch the occasional show, it's on par with a Bigfoot sighting to find a good one.

Remember Curt Gowdy’s American Sportsman on ABC? Bing Crosby and Phil Harris hunting ducks. I think I remember The Duke hunting in Africa. Oh how I wish those days were still with us.

I’m not sure what you’ve been watching, but I’ve seen many really good full length personal hunt movies released to YouTube recently. Most about 1.5 hours. They look like they were posted there to show their friends more easily. I’d hardly call them narcissists. Some of the 20 minute amateur YouTube channels that have a corny show introduction I can agree, but there is a huge variety available there.

What would you say has changed with This is Africa? That’s disappointing to hear. I’ve been waiting for them to be put on YouTube.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
