Did Cabela’s stop selling African hunting merchandise?

I quit wasting my time driving across Houston to go to Cabelas. You can almost write a check on the fact that they will not have what you are looking for and it pisses me off to see BP branded products on the shelf! In today’s world of the internet a guy can get almost anything within 24 hours from Midway or many other online vendors. It is a shame that Cabelas has gone this way. I’m sure Cabela never saw this coming. I wish Sportsman’s Warehouse would open back up in Texas.

Have to agree with all that is said here about Cabelas' demise. Used to love planning a stop at their "new" super store off I-80 in Sydney every December when I was traveling that corridor. Then they built stores everywhere and that was great for a while. Always loved the Boise store as they had the Elmer Kieth museum in the corner and I ALWAYS went and paid homage to Elmer when I went in there. Well, Elmer and all of his guns and trophies and memorabilia are long gone. The store is just not the same, as there is more and more fishing tackle, and less and less hunting gear - and this is in Idaho! Not that there aren't a lot of fisherman in Idaho, but, really? Idaho is game country, it is not Alaska, or the great lakes.....so I agree with others on here that say Midway USA and Larry Potterfield are the way to go.

I have a Cabela’s 25 miles south and a Sportsman’s Warehouse 25 miles north. I prefer SW.
I do hope my Cabela’s Safari vest holds up a few more years until I’m old and can’t go to Africa any more.

Cabela’s has definitely gone down hill. I wear tall size shirts and jackets. Canela’s had a good selection but since BP took over, the choices are minimal.
Tangent to that, Cabela’s had their safari clothing in tall sizes. Now they don’t even carry safari clothing.
They built a new Cabela’s in Columbus, OH about five or six years ago. It was always disappointing going there versus Wheeling, WV or Dundee MI. Now,the store is poorly stocked and has that “junky” feel.

Used to be able to trade a gun or buy a used gun at Cabela's--you'd think BP would have the good sense to retain the best features of both, including the bargain cave...

Used to shop Cabelas some but found what little they had was usually not what I wanted and was overpriced. For the last several years I almost live in SW. I buy most all my components there in calibers they carry. I've walked out of there with several guns over the years, too. Best prices and with my military discount I can't beat it. If I can't find it there Midway or Brownells usually does. And, of course, there is always Amazon. Two day delivery and free shipping with Prime. Well worth the hundred bucks a year.

When they first talked of the sale to BP it was said that everything would be the same at Cabela's and there would be no change.

Sorry to say I doubt that I will buy anything from Cabela's again.

As I said in the other thread about Cabela's and BassPro, I know both the Morris family and the Potterfield family well, I only spend my money at Midway. There is no comparison between the two when it comes our common interests.

As another on-line option, one should check out a company called Highby Outdoors. It is being run by a couple that was let go from Cabelas in Sidney Nebraska. Cabelas actually sued them for starting the company but they won in court. Their prices on what I have looked at are competitive as well.

I do almost all of my shopping online- cove creek outfitters and eurooptic for rifles; Amazon or direct with manufacturer for optics and accessories; midway and cheaper than dirt for ammo; etc

That said, everyone seems to bash Red Head. I have a hunting jacket with insert from them that I like great. I'd say it's on paar with cabelas o2 octane gear. But maybe I have bad taste.

I go to my bass pro when I need something last minute for a hunt and dont have time to order online.

Midway ALL the way. No other company or family supports shooting sports, education and our way of life more than Midway and the Potterfields. If you find two products on line and the one at Midway is only a buck or two more, buy Midway and count the 2 bucks as an investment in our sport.

Cabelas is on its way out. I heard from folks who know at SCI that this is the case. Some Cabelas will close and others will be overwhelmed with Bass Pro merchandise. Not to sound to full of myself but I have moved on to more specialized clothing and equipment than is available in these stores anyway. I always love the big stores and especially the one in Springfield MO. I enjoy going there but rarely buy much buy maybe gun cleaning supplies etc. Johnny Morris is a smart businessman but this is a head scratcher for me.

I'm sure that those folks running around in the tan vests at Cabela's aren't there "for fun".......they are trying to make a living as well as those who own small business.........I guess I have to draw the line at "what does the store/company do for me as an outdoorsman?" Do they decide to cave/pander to the whims of the antigun crowd (as Dicks management has done)?......trying to look "enlightened" and politically correct for the masses......most of which have never stepped into a Dicks store? Do they remove ALL their field sports (fishing, camping, etc) as Dicks has done? Do they refuse to sell anything in camo print, such as REI has done......again, to be "P.C."? I do buy from REI, but it's minimal (usually Sawyer tick repellent......because no one else around here carries it). For me, it's starting to be more customer service, and finding some sales person who has the same passion for the outdoors as I do; not someone working in an area that they really don't have any idea as to what they are selling.

It might be a local thing.......the one by my house does not; there was a blurb in the paper about it a few years back, saying how they didn't want to attract an "undesirable element" or some such nonsense. Or maybe they've changed their policy and decided that hunters/gun owners $$$ are just as good as anyone else's and that "PC" is crap......................
