Detachable Scope and Airline Travel??

What do you keep the scopes in while in your backpack/carry-on?
Neoprene scope cover then wrapped in a shemaugh or shirt in my carry one. Any piece of clothing that can protect it will work. The neoprene scope cover just protects the lenses from additional dust, lint, or small debris.

I’ve carried a spare scope in my carry-on, on Delta, Qatar, AirLink, and British Airways to Africa, and stateside on American, United, Delta, and Southwest with zero issues

I was able to travel with my scope on my carry on without any issues. Worked like a charm.

My scopes always travel in the same case as the rifle. I’m currently packing for my moose hunt and this is my luggage.

I’ve never ( touch wood) seen issues with Pelican….and I’ve spent a lot of years working in airports.

One thing about putting scopes into cabin bags. Don’t do it if you’re travelling through Australia. It’s not illegal….but it will cause you grief with screening staff and airline representatives. I’ve seen it happen ‍:X3::oops:

Carried a detachable scope on AA and QA without issues. Think this is more of an issue with individual TSA agents than airlines. The airline ticket agent has no way of knowing what is in my carry-on bag.

They do when the security screening staff advise them of an issue/possible issue. I’ve also seen instances where passengers have told airline employees when answering security questions during the check in process.

If you are being flaged for additional security screening past TSA security checkpoints, you have more problems than a couple of removable scopes in your carry-on.

That's my point. The ticketing agent would never have known unless the TSA agent told them.

I never take my scopes off. But I do carry an extra scope just in case. Talk about screening! When leaving Songea, Tanzania this year the security fellow checked my carry on and took my pack of tic tacs out. Language was an issue and I was trying to explain they were breath mints. He could have used them. He was not happy until he made me take one in front of him.

X-rays…..all cabin baggage is screened. I spent a number of years working at an International Airport. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to attend jobs involving firearm accessories and or spent cases/ projectiles being detected in carry on luggage.

No one told the screening staff. They saw it on x-ray and or by other detection methods.

Screening usually then have a list of people/agencies to notify.

I've not had good luck with detachable scope rings except Blaser. I fly with a Pelican 2 gun case with rifles packed in soft cases and have never had a concern or damage of any kind. I have two Z8 scopes which cost about $4K each but I don't worry about it.
I see damage on most every trip with other brands of gun cases. This year it was another client who had a metal 2 gun case which leaked and was full of water on the way home.
Use Pelican cases for everything and don't worry.

Philip
Which pelican case do you use? Do you use a custom foam liner insert or the stock ones? Scopes in the case or in your carryon?

My pelican 1750 can accept two rifles standard size with scopes.
I use the foam liner provided with case, just I cut out the holes.

For African travel, I did not take two rifles.
So in pelican 1750 case i put: rifle, jim shokey shooting stick, sling and sheath knife.
Fore safe keeping i took rifle scope with me in cabin luggage.

I use the Protector 2 rifle case. The Vault is good as well but I have not warmed up to it yet. I use a variety of smaller Pelican cases for my ammo box. I like my trusty old Protector 2 rifle That has literally been around the world with me. I take out the middle foam so that the rifles will fit in soft cases. My setup is usually 2 rifles and a small gear bag. My scopes have covers on them and are in the aforementioned soft rifle case. Knock on wood, I've never had any damage.

It's amazing how repeatable the R8 scope mount system is. Mine have all been removed numerous times, and always return to zero.
It is the only system that ever truly worked for me.

Does the Blaser R8 Negrini case fit inside a Pelican 1700?

So I have to ask... Why?

I travel with an R8 in the Pelican 1700 unless I am also taking my double and then I use a traditional aluminum case. Years before I used an R8 I carried regular bolt rifles with scopes.

I have never had an issue with any of my rifles.. never lost zero, nothing... With a quality rifle case the risk damage that would affect the scope and the entire rifle is rare.. I worry more about them losing it than damaging it. Seems to me you are just begging for a hassle trying to bring them in a carry on and could very well end up with a problem. Getting out of the US might be doable but the return trip - I would not want to try check in with one in my carry on in any European country..

If you have shot the rifle and not cleaned the scope thoroughly, the residue is probably enough to set off their sensors as well - once again, more hassle.. and God help you if you get an anti checking you...

I picked up an old leather coat at Salvation Army store and cut material from it to make bags with drawstrings for each of my two scopes. My late wife's sewing machine did a good job ... once I taught myself how to use it.

I use Pelican Vault. Haven't cut the foam but I could. Those come with several layers of foam. I removed one thin layer and the lid closes firmly on two guns. But not firmly enough as it turns out. Last trip both guns had buttstocks marred by muzzles of adjacent rifle. Not a big deal as I was able to easily clean them up at home later (advantage of oil stock finish). I could cut the foam but then only those two guns can be used. Instead I have slip-on recoil pads that I put on the rifles when they're in the case. They protect the buttstocks.

If you decide to cut the foam, an electric knife will do a nice job. Here's a range case I made for my shotguns.
