Just checked in to fly from Atlanta to Johannesburg on Delta and they are saying I can only have 1 gun per locked case. I was shocked. Had to call my wife to come get one of my rifles. Very Frustrating. Is there a new policy I haven’t heard about? Will this be a problem since I have 2 guns on all my paperwork? This is my first trip to Africa.

Never heard of this. Must be very recent.

This is news to me and either a rule changed or a worker doesn't know what they are doing. Hoping it's the latter. This screenshot is from Deltas website

Delta website says you can transport up to 4 rifles per case. When I showed them, they said it’s a Johannesburg policy. I’m really frustrated. With this being my first trip, I did extensive research and never saw anything about 1 gun per case. I just hope I don’t have problems with my paperwork since it shows 2 rifles.

I'm sure it's too late but did you speak to a manager about this contradiction?

Someone needs to contact Henry at Rifle Permits right away about this. Not going to help Baron G58, but might help the next guy going over.

You will be fine arriving with one rifle.

Sorry to hear of yet one more employee that is clueless.
Have a good trip.

Written complaint when you get a moment.

I flew this May Atl to Joburg and this was my case. Maybe the rule changed since then, but I had no problems. Hope it all works out for you.

Email sent to Henry 15 min ago. Will post reply when received.

This is the third report, in a very short time, of an AH member encountering Airline Staff Stupidity (ASS) regarding firearms.

Time to start carrying paper copies of:
1. the IATA POLICIES related to firearms and ammunition.
2. Airline stated firearms/ammunition policy posted on the web.

Demand to see a Manager.

Sounds like an ill informed person!

When I showed them, they said it’s a Johannesburg policy.

If so, it's a very recent policy change. But I'm thinking someone is full of crap. @AZ KJ and I just got back a couple weeks ago and he flew with two rifles in his case.

No problems with airline, airport or SAPS.

Always, Always have a copy of all your paperwork including the airline regs for the airline you are flying, be it domestic or international. I had that problem some years ago and was saved by that little piece of paper.

Another thing to be aware of is how to pack ammunition. Flew the end of April and lady at Delta check in made me put my ammo, which was locked in a separate case in my checked bag, in with my rifle. I questioned her but she insisted that was how to do it. When we got to the SAPS office in Jberg ,my son, who was with me as an observer, did a quick change when the SAPS officer was not looking and put the ammo back into the separate locked case.

I had a copy of everything, it didn’t help. I’ve reached out to Delta for clarification. They continue to say it’s a policy with Johannesburg airport.

Please feel free to call Delta Employees, Christy (Manager) and Owen (guy that checked my bags) in OKC/Will Rogers for more clarification. Warning, they are not pleasant to deal with.

Well it's less than 30 days since 3 of us flew in and out of Johannesburg . I had 2 rifles and both my buddies had 3. No problems.

Seems like the policy is open for interpretation by whomever is checking you in.

Besides carrying Delta's firearm policy what other paperwork would have helped show this employee that they were incorrect? Especially if they say it's on the Joburg side.

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France
