+1. I too had never heard of it before reading about it on AH and people using it in Africa. I hunt big game or pheasants here usually after multiple freezes have occurred and there's no mosquitos or ticks anywhere to be found. When hunting doves here in Sept., or camping in the summer, I just use DEET on my clothes and skin, mainly for mosquitos. Permethrin is nice, because it bonds to the fabric's molecules and will still be effective after up to six washes in the washing machine. I think in potential tick country, it's the way to go, but you still have to use DEET or something similar on your skin.I had never heard of permethrin either, before AH… still no clue where I can buy the solution to drench my clothes in.
I bought my permethrin at the farm store in concentrate and dilute it to the same level as the store bought stuff. If you are somewhere other than the US you might want to go down to a farm supply store and see what they have for dipping cows and sheep to keep the biting insects off of them. They may have it in concentrate that you will then have to dilute way down to spray on your clothing.
Here is what Amazon has here in the US.
Buy it at Tractor Supply as well. During bow season in south Texas, I dilute and spray it on all my gear. Also great for fleas in the yard. But don't use if you have cats or near a pond. As for Deet, I ruined a very nice Suunto dive watch years in Mexico with it. Had no idea it eats clear coat on paint. Thanks for the tip @thriller. On a side note, on my first trip to Africa back in 83 their was spray can of DDT next to the bed.I had never heard of permethrin either, before AH… still no clue where I can buy the solution to drench my clothes in.
I'm going to take a look the next time I'm at Tractor Supply. Much less expensive than the Sawyer stuff I buy.If you do find it in concentrate the store bought Permithin in the spray bottles only contains 0.5%Permithin and 99.5% inert ingredients or water.
So a little bit goes a very long ways.
My store had sawyer, for $7-8 a bottle, I walked back to the animal health section and bought 8 ounces of concentrate for $10I'm going to take a look the next time I'm at Tractor Supply. Much less expensive than the Sawyer stuff I buy.
I saw gallon containers of 13% for $60 while the Sawyer 1% is $20 for 24 oz. Buying the concentrate from now on.My store had sawyer, for $7-8 a bottle, I walked back to the animal health section and bought 8 ounces of concentrate for $10
I spray diluted (0.5%) mix on my clothes and let it air dry for a couple of days in the garage. Wife says she can't stand the smell of it when the clothes are wet, but when they dry it's fine. I've never used the dryer because coating the inside of it with permethrin is of little use...and I'm not sure how heat would change the results. I've also never soaked clothes in a bag, just sprayed and had excellent results.Do you spray the diluted mixture on your clothes, or mix up a tubful and dip the clothes? Do you dry them in the air or in the dryer?
