Dealing with recoil?

I'm guessing recoil energy isn't an absolute measure of felt recoil. I have never shot anything bigger than my 300WSM but I find it more uncomfortable to shoot than my Mossberg 935 with a 3 1/2" turkey load. A friend told me he would much rather shoot a 375 H&H than a 338 win because one is a punch the other a push. Much like my 45ACP vs 40S&W

Thanks to all for all the tips/hints/suggestions......my arm (i.e bicep) is black & blue this morning, so I'm thinking that at some point the gun slipped off my shoulder and this is what started the obnoxious pain and downward spiral yesterday.
I plan on trying again in a few weeks........................................

dont let this event discourage you! we all start somewhere and none of us start out as pros. with proper shooting technique and practice you will be shooting that 375 and MUCH bigger guns without pain.

is there a forum member in your area who shoots large bore guns? do you plan on making a trip near WA any time soon? (i would happily help you out)

make sure you are completely healed and pain free before getting back on the horse

here is my friend shooting a 585 HE, this gun generates over three times the recoil of the 375 H&H. my friend is around 5' 10" 130 pounds and is closing in on 60 years old.

note the way he's standing and how he shoulders the rifle. he fired around 10-15 shots from this rifle that day and some of these loads were MUCH more powerful then the one in the video.

@colorado , having to go to the doctor, reminds me of a safari a few years ago, I had a group of French clients, it was Easter Sunday morning and clients were sighting rifles, one client cut his eye real badly on the scope. We were near a rural town, very conservative . I had to take the client to get stitched up, when we got to the town, I was told the only doctor was in church. I have never been so nervous of walking into the church to find the doctor, I told him we needed help......well the doctor was an avid hunter and was more than willing to help, I was truly expecting a blasting from him.

The good Doc has his priorities right...(y)

Set up a long term plan to master any big bore rifle of your choosing.
It is unwise to go from a 30-06 to a 375 or beyond.
After 30-06 is mastered go to the 300 win mag
Go to the 338 Win mag
Then 375
Stay in good shape
Shoot twice a week and you should get there in two years

There are various ways to decrease the recoil velocity or extend its duration, both of which reduce the felt recoil, but the main thing you can do without making changes to your rifle or attire is to make sure that your rifle is tight against your shoulder and cheek. If the rifle doesn't get a run at you it become a push rather than a hit.

this thread is 3 years old... hopefully he has figured out how to deal with recoil since then LOL.

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
Spending a few years hunting out west then back to Africa!

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
