Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

I know nothing about HSC but the Atlanta move to the Gentile southern gentlemen hunter does not seem to translate to African Hunter. I was disappointed with the weather and I know DSC could not control that.

It just seems to make more sense to move back to Texas. That said I do intend to go to DSC next year as after having visited SCI in Nashville DSC seems to be more of the “common man” hunting show.
I am not sure exactly what you are looking for or why SCI didn't suit you but consider TTHA in Dallas. I am sure you would like it.

As I mentioned, I don't think it will be logistically possible for them to move it immediately. It is simply too big of an undertaking. If anything happens, it will be in 2027.
Too many pieces that need to come together.

I think what is more concerning is most are saying the same thing, but not many are coming up with a real solution. San Antonio is being mentioned but past that, there really doesn't seem to be many other options. Every other option mentioned, seems to come with its own set of problems.
Some said Vegas, but then also heard that Vegas could be too distracting. ( The idea is to have people focus on the show and not get swept up in , well, Vegas which is also understandable.) This made a lot of sense to me. Orlando was mentioned, but doesn't seem to get the stamp of approval as much as SA gets.
I heard they didn't want to change their dates and that limited their choices of venues. Looks like Atlanta for two more years then somewhere else.

They can’t get a quantitative answer… but if they cared, they could get a qualitative answer..

Poll, survey, and interview the membership..

It’s not too hard to get an understanding of where the show was heading before the snow impacted things… between this web forum and the only other I am aware of with and international hunting theme, there are numerous threads posted for a years time telling DSC just what membership thinks..

At another place, a past president and former board member of DSC has been very vocal about what he believes is at the core of the problem…

FWIW, he didn’t go to ATL, and is pretty much no longer involved in the organization. I get the impression it’s due to the current leadership group and its ongoing behavior…
They still have not polled their members. I guess they don't care what people think of the goings on of late?

That’s my assessment…

Still haven’t heard from the CEO… his January statement was clearly a hollow promise..

Still haven’t bothered to talk to membership.. pretty obvious they weren’t interested in our opinions prior to making any of the decisions in question.. and they remain uninterested now…

Agree with this. I heard firm toe outfitters at SCI that they really appreciated the note he sent out. One actually said he thought is was surprising because it was remarkably humble for an American businessman.

For there to not be any follow up nearly two months later could be wasting that goodwill.

Eighteen pages and counting…If only the DSC planning committee would have spent this amount of time considering locations they could have avoided this poor choice.

It would probably be for the best. How many competing orgs do we need?

It is an unpopular opinion but that is why I didn't like the DSC chapter rollout. It felt more like it was further saturation to an already saturated local/regional chapter banquet system (DU, RMEF, WSF, SCI, NWTF, etc).

Here is the CEO email for those that did not receive it.

DSC CEO UPDATE

[td]To Our Valued Partners,

As some of you may know, the Dallas Safari Club Convention week in Atlanta was my first official full week on the job as the new CEO for DSC. Convention was a steep learning curve for me, meeting people, learning about the mechanics of the event, and taking in as much information as possible. This past week has allowed me, our DSC staff, and our volunteer leadership to have a short time to debrief, while also continuing to take in and process data and valuable feedback, so that DSC can collectively understand how to best move forward.

As we ended our first convention in Atlanta 9 days ago, we had a “CEO roundtable” with a representative group of about 50 exhibitor partners to receive real-time feedback on everything that could be improved for future shows regarding thoughts and concerns about everything Atlanta. Between the information that was openly shared during the roundtable, combined with the continuous flow of information over the past week via event surveys, formal letters, social media posts, and direct conversations with our valued exhibitor partners, sponsors, and members, our DSC team has quickly gained important context on the broad sentiments regarding the outcome of the convention, as well as expressed concerns regarding possible future plans.

Though the feedback we have received spans the spectrum from negative to positive, the two most common themes that are reflective of the feedback include this: there is a broad concern from our convention stakeholders regarding our ability to enjoy the degree of success for all stakeholders that we have become accustomed to over the years should our convention remain in Atlanta; and two, there is an expressed strong commitment from our convention partners to continue to support DSC but with a request for improved communication.

This update letter today is to start that process for better communication and let you all know that DSC is hearing your concerns. We understand that without the support from our exhibitor partners, sponsors, donors, members, and others, DSC will not be able to continue to deploy our mission as successfully as in the past and to continue to be looked at as a world leader in supporting conservation and being a strong voice for our important hunting heritage.

Listening and communication are a good start but putting an actionable plan together that addresses the concerns is what matters the most. The DSC team is currently working around the clock to put that plan in place as quickly as possible so you can see how serious we are taking the current situation.

I ask for your continued patience and support as we work through this important process. My goal and commitment to all of you is to have more details by the end of January or early February that will allow you to better plan for upcoming events based on our path forward that we are charting now.

Thank you all, again, for your candor and continued support of DSC.

thought I should bring this back up so everyone could be reminded..

the CEO specifically said there were 2 main themes that DSC was aware of... 1) broad concern over success if the show continues in Atlanta.. and 2) they need to communicate better..

he also committed to provide additional information in "late January or early February"...

Well... lets see...

Its mid March... and there's been no additional information provided...

DSC committed to remaining in ATL without any further conversations with stakeholders that Im aware of

and there's been no follow on communication.. communication has not improved at all... it would appear its actually gotten worse..

Not even a whisper to their membership. Not even an e-mail to the chapter boards. Supposed to have a leadership convention in Denver next month. I am undecided if I even want to take the time to go. I will wait and see what response happens (if any) between now and then. I promise to respond here as soon as I hear anything.

It appears that we may be witnessing the beginning of the end. I truly hope not, but it certainly seems to be moving in that direction.

I can understand your sentiment, but the local chapters serve hunters that may not have the time or funds to travel once a year to the big conventions. I can’t speak for all chapters, but Oklahoma chapter elects to spend our fundraising dollars on Oklahoma conservation projects, so it’s more of a companion to the bigger Dsc global view. If you can, go to a meeting in your area and see what they are doing in your neighborhood. I guarantee it’s not being spent on Weatherby awards.

I would tend to agree. Our chapter, DSC Carolinas Foundation, just had our banquet on March 1st. Beyond the required amount that is to be shared with DSC and DSC Foundation, the monies will remain in the Carolinas.

Our banquet did have US Senator Tedd Budd (R-NC) as a speaker along with a personal letter from Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) that was read. At least we are attracting the attention of some serious politicians who will be receptive to our conservation concerns.

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
