With my current desires & curiosities pushing me towards a 500 Jeffery or 505 Gibbs, this new listing certainly caught my eye today. Doing some quick google research didn’t really turn up much on the “577 Rimless” so reached out to the seller for more information both on the cartridge as well as the specific action it was built upon. Listing says it’s a Mauser, but wondering if that doesn’t possibly prove more accurately as a Mauser style action. Also wondering what if any difference there is between this and the 577 T-Rex. Admit I like rimless better, lol.

Regardless, looked like a boomer some of you gents might know a thing or two about, or at least enjoy discussing. Cheers!

Great looking rifle i would imagine recoil would be be heavy. do not know any thing about the cartridge. but with dies & brass it would get you started I have the 17 th edition of cartridges of the world its not listed.

That’s a bloody nice rifle that, just load to .577NE 3in level, all you need & a bit more !

I think the .577 Tyrannosaurus/T-Rex is the .577 Rimmless, I don’t have one in my collection but I have a .585 Nyati/Buffalo.

Below is a .505 Gibbs .577NE .585 Nyati.

Like others, I'm not sure what a "577 Rimless" is - the Tyrannosaur, the Nyati or something even more esoteric. Curious though, and I would guess it packs quite a punch.

Any info available from the seller? Ammo, fired brass, cartridge length etc?

Listing says its not the Tyranasaur or the Nyati. It states its a 577 NE 3" with the rim turned off

Emm does now, it didn’t say that yesterday & weight was 12.5 Lbs, must have up dated it ?
Still a very nice & I think useable rifle for Elephant & swatting Buffalo ?

I wonder does it headspace on the case mouth, not a complete deal breaker but not ideal either ?

Oops. Should have been paying more attention when reading the text in the listing.

From what I understand, that is how the (heads of the) initial 585 Nyati cases were formed. Perhaps a good idea to go for mild loads.

So the seller got back to me but the response only created more questions and with my workday a bit crazy didn’t get a chance to reach back out.

They said the action was a propriatary action designed and built by Frank Wells…which is never heard of him making his own. Seemed like a bit of a punt or almost assumption/guess, which after Moose’s reply above…he nailed it…it didn’t inspire confidence.

The response on my inquiry for more information on the cartridge was worse yet.

Here is the totality of the response:

“””This rifle is built on Frank Wells' proprietary Mauser-type action.
This is a true .577 NE 3" made into a rimless case, essentially built for a bolt-action rifle.”””

So, if you spin the rim from a “true 577 NE 3””…I mean I guess you could, it would make it rimless for sure, but…uh…it would headspace off what? With no rim, no shoulder, clearly no belt, I’m at a loss.

Am I missing something? Admit I’ve never owned a 577NE, but have seen them and 470’s and 500/416 brass. If it’s left as a strait wall cartridge and just remove the rim, just seems like some Elmer Fudd scene where you drop in a cartridge and it falls out the barrel. lol. I realize the rifling diameter would prevent it, but that’s what popped into my head when I read it. Even had to go back later to re-read it thinking I had to have missed something.

Anyway, was a bit disheartened by the response that seems likely incorrect on both counts. And after I took the time to write out a respectful and well thought out series of questions and expressed genuine interest. I know I should just call them, but time didn’t allow today and now I’m iffy at best.

Yep, looks an awful lot like the BBK-02 action on my 470 Mbogo.
Serial number on my action is L04XX.
Bauska Brill Korean.
The other Wells, Fred Wells did make his own Magnum Mauser actions from scratch.
Super Magnum Mauser.
Didn't he do one that was sized for the 50 BMG ?

The ad says 13.6 lbs in one place and 12.5 lbs lower down.
Does seller have a single cartridge image or link to any info to show ?
Blurry but I think I read "Frank Wells Custom 577 Rimless" on top of barrel.

From link above:
"Both Fred Wells, celebrated custom riflemaker to kings, and Michael Roden, founder of highly respected Granite Mountain Arms, have developed .585 cartridges with overall greater length and case capacity than the Nyati to fit the big Wells Super and GMA African Magnum Mauser actions made by both firms. Case length of the Nyati is 2.79” and both the .585 Wells Express and the .585 GMA Express are almost half an inch longer. This greater case capacity makes the cartridges more versatile. Depending on the powder used, they can be loaded to achieve increased velocity, for those bent on testing the structural integrity of their bullets, or decreased chamber pressure, always an important consideration in hot-weather hunting. The Wells and GMA .585s are almost indistinguishable, with the Wells case sharing the very slightly rebated rim of the Nyati and the GMA case being rimless. Ballistic performance potential of both cartridges should be identical, and beyond the limitations of the shorter Nyati case."

To fit and function in a BBK-02 the 577 Rimless would most likely be rebated at the rim and have a shoulder similar to the .585 Nyati, eh ?

If you read my reply, I asked what did it headspace of if no shoulder as a true .577NE with rim turn off ?

Not end of the world as many Battle/War cartridges in semi & auto firearms have no shoulder as my 510WSM & many other sporting cartridges with never a problem, .45ACP .9mm .30 Carbine plus tens of sporting rounds.

I admit I personally would prefer a shoulder/Belt on my personal back up DG rifle !

If the “rimless” is the Wells/GMA, then it’s not rebated and takes the same shell holder as the 505.

Ah, but the linked article says the Wells is rebated and the GMA is not.
The GMA action has a greater bolt diameter, better for .505 Gibbs rim.

This IS NOT the same cartridge as a .577 T-Rex or .585 Nyati.

This rifle is chambered for a .577 a full length .577 3" NE with the rim turned down to fit the magnum bolt face.

Ammo and components available for this rifle.

the ad says the above
