If the opinion of a hunter who has only taken one buffalo with a CPS and one giraffe with a 9.3x62 ( Norma oryx) counts for anything, I think the 9.3 mm CPS would be nearly ideal for hunting giraffe. Good penetration AND good wound channel.

Perfect and that's exactly the application I'm thinking of...416 Rigby on buff. Do you mind sharing load data? Did you approach it like loading for a Barnes X? I asked NF for load data and got just a little bit of info and no starting loads...only max loads.

Bullet hit inside surface of right "ham", penetrated hindquarter ( missing the femur), through guts, rumen, and part of the right lung, lodged in ribcage on right side, after at least a meter and a half of penetration. There was a very noticeable "whomp' when the bullet hit, and visible reaction to the shot. buffalo ran only about five more steps. I was very impressed. Of course they quit making them!

There was a noticeable difference between the NF and the other two, on impact performance and penetration Sadly NF is folding. They have an excellent design, expensive, but “you get what you pay for!”

I would suggest you will get plenty of penetration with the CPSs. Why not use the Northfork semi spitzers? Are giraffes that tough?

I shot a giraffe with a 375H&H 2023. I used our SS for the first shot and CPS as second shot to see penetration. I shot it in the shoulder. It penetrated the first shoulder and stopped at he bone at the other side. If you use a 9,3x62 its not so big different to a 375H&H.

A few years ago I killed a Buff in Zimbabwe with 300 TSX bullets from my 375 H&H
In my belt were several rounds loaded with 300 g Cup Point Solids which I had not used while killing the Buff. I wanted to try one so from about 10 yds behind the Buff I fired one shot into the Buff through one of the thighs. Later at the skining shed one of the boys found the bullet in the chest cavity looking just like the North Fork pictures advertise. I still have it.

Thicker skin larger body and less bullet exits than on buffalo.

Just got Kevin Robertson's P.S.2 and he recommends solids for giraffe.
Someone here reported Barnes TSX out of a magnum stopped just past the heart.
2x the size of a buff.

For 375 RUM, are the cup points and woodleigh hydro's a good round for buffalo? My concern is over penetration and wounding another buffalo...

How do the cup points and woodleigh hydro's compare to CEB Safari Raptors, Hammer Hunters and Lehigh Defense mono-metals that shed petals or a barnes tsx that mushrooms for killing power on buffalo?

I ask because I saw an interview with Kevin Robertson yesterday, he said that for hunting buffalo it's best to have two different bullets in the gun - the first shot is more of a expanding bullet for broadside and the follow up shot a bullet that penetrates a little deeper for running away buffalo. So, is a magazine full of only CEB Safari Raptors good enough or should there be some cup points in there too?

Thanks for the replies. Any photos of a recovered cup point? I like the comment about them riveting. That’s more accurate than to say expanding solid. There also seems to be some kind of air bubble effect that has hydraulic cavitation results that create larger than caliber wound channels. That’s the logical explanation for disruption beyond the touch of the bullet. The riveting is fairly minor in comparison to the petals of an expanding soft point.

Unlikely. John McAdams gel tested these against NF SS, penetration was something like 60% deeper with CP solids. Hard to envision anything but through and through on everything but ele.

I have only 1 recovered CPS...end to end through a big eland and recovered under the skin after 6 plus feet of penetration. No recoveries on other game including ele. NF doesn't endorse them for ele but my big bull only went 50 yards on a heart shot. Excellent bullet, which I plan to use more.

I used a CPS in 375 H&H (350gr at 2350fps) for a quartering brain shot on a bull hippo at about 15 yards (dry land). The bullet absolutely stoned the hippo; he fell in his tracks with a mouthful of grass. I was interested to note that we did not get an exit on the other side of the skull. I would use this bullet again for this application, without reservations.

I also used the same bullet for backing shots on Cape buffalo, with excellent results.

I personally would not use this bullet on elephant, in any caliber. Solids only for me on elephant. The CPS is a sort of hybrid solid and works great for the intended purpose.
