Hi all! In very beginning of a panning 2024 hunt and am interested in doing a nighttime crop raider hippo hunt! Due to moving and other hunts I would be limited to March and early April. Are those months any good or is better success found in the dry season? Any recommendations would be great especially any outfitters or countries/regions. Only interested in hunts that I can import to the US from currently. Could not find much information out there on this particular topic.
Thanks in advance!

To me it looks like PAC hippo hunt? I am not sure is it possible?
We will see what the knowledgable community will say.

Hippo hunt, in general, yes, there are regular offers on the forum. But crop raiding hippo?
Hmm... lets wait for answers.

Hi @Kowalski,

I've send you a DM

Sincerely

Sounds like a cool idea. I've heard of crop raiding elephant so I gotta assume hippos raid crops too. Good luck on your search!!

My guess is he is looking for an exclusively on-land hippo hunt. I'm hoping to complete the same in Zim next year after we (hopefully) get our elephants.

How interested are you in trophy quality? The South African night hunts I’ve been told exciting but you get what you get. Maybe consider a dry land hunt in Mozambique or Zimbabwe during day if interested in a nice trophy.

You are looking for almost a phantom situation.

Do you have experience with a PH where this situation might happen?

Why do you say it’s a phantom situation? There is an old offer on similar threads listed here. I was offered a similar hunt by a different PH during my buffalo hunt in South Africa, but isn’t something that interests me.

I apologize.

I didn't know that PAC situations were common.

(I'm on a waiting list in Mozambique for elephant, that I doubted would ever materialize).

I did a DCA Hippo by myself & it was awesome hunt, sat & waited many nights, this was a Killer Hippo & had been shot a few times before, with as it turned out a nasty snare wound to.

He was coming straight for me when I first shot him, very exciting & I apply for any DCA permits that come up near me.

Yes you take what you get trophy wise, the other Bull I could of gone after was a true monster, mine was average but I wouldn't swap my hunt for any money .

Send you some information

We do Hippo hunts out of our front door at very reasonable prices. Nightime is possible, but not really recommended. One reason is our permits specify Male Hippo only. Needless to say it would be very easy to make a mistake and just because "she" charged you does not make it legal.

We usually combine our hippo hunts with a croc hunt. P.M. if interested.

Be careful on a PAC hunt in Mozambique, when I was there they could not be sold to foreign hunters. The laws may have changed since I was there, which would be a great thing.

On my first RSA hunt, one property boundary was the Crocodile river and there were hippos and crocs present there. There were small ravines where the hippos came from the river up on to the crop field with head high grass. We saw hippos daily in the water and also sunning on the opposite bank. Hippo tracks were obvious in the ravine bottoms. I shot a Bush buck that went down on the bank of the river and the PH and I walked down one of those ravines to recover the dead buck in the dark!
We were on high alert, but fortunately did not encounter any hippos.
After two days of hunting , we took a last walk down to the river and heard and saw hippos in the water and found a nest of croc eggs on the sandy bank. We decided it was time to go pack bags for trip home.

I’m a bit curious as as to why you have interest in crop raiding hippos?? Is it a price thing? I am hunting Hippo in the Limpopo region of SA next month and the price is reasonable. There is no PAC opportunity for expats in Zimbabwe. I just inquired about availability of PAC on Elephants and was told definitely No! Hope you find what you are seeking. Cajun Hunter

For me dangerous game is more about hunting the most aggressive or destructive game. Don't get me wrong I would love an enormous hippo or elephant or anyother animal for that matter. But for me knowing that I am in this case taking a hippo out that is causing massive property damage gives me more a sense of satisfation. Price is'nt so much my motivation but it is defidently a nice benefit!

Trophy quality is not to big of a concern to me. If I had muliple options I would go for which ever is causing the most damage or most aggresive. I would not be dissapointed if it were bigger bull though haha
