COVID-19 Coronavirus UPDATES, BANS, CLOSURES, ADVISORY, etc.

Some are saying the CDC got caught with their pants down on the availability of test kits for an outbreak.? Not really surprising.
How can the CDC have test kits available for a virus strain that we didn't know existed until a few months ago? They didn't get caught unprepared. On the contrary, the CDC is moving faster and more efficiently than it ever has in history. The genome sequence of the virus was completely mapped out in just days! Vaccines went into human trials within weeks! Treatments were approved within 2 months. Within a day of confirming that the virus is transmitted human to human, Trump ordered travel bans (remember, in mid January, China and the WHO said it wasn't transmitted human to human). We have never seen a better response from the CDC, FDA, and the private sector than what we are seeing now.

Yep. Not only are statistics no good, they’re outright hostile. A stat tried to mug me last week.

A set of data can be used to paint lots of different pictures, but for every misleading half-truth graph there are hundreds of honest attempts to present useful data in a consumable way. Probability and statistics are how science extrapolates conclusions that fix problems.

If you chronograph ten shots of your pet load how do you feel about your conclusions about the speed of the next ten rounds? If you take ten deer with an A-Frame of your pet load and recover ten perfectly mushroomed bullets how do you feel about your ability to assert the excellence of your pet load?

It seems to me that broad criticism of statistics and general efforts at scienceing is unproductive.
I'm a pretty simple, and no nonsense, type of man. My mindset is driven by results, and the bottom line.

Statistics may be a snapshot of data at a given point in time, but without a cure, it's nothing but mental masturbation to anyone outside the healthcare industry, or CDC.

I understand the risks of this virus spreading. I also understand the risks of financial ruination. Been there done that, in 2009. Lost just about everything I ever worked for. I am a shell of my former financial self. Don't want to go through that again. Not over some virus panic.

What will have a greater impact on the population as a whole? I'd like to see some data on that, if and when, this blows over.

Have a nice day.

I'm shock the Chinese caught it at all.

Did anyone see the guy on Fox News yesterday, well I saw it yesterday, could have been earlier than that. He was on Tucker Carlson's show. This guy claimed that France used the same drug that they use for malaria on 40 people that were positive for this virus and all 40 were cured.
I'm no doctor, so maybe someone else knows if there is any truth to this. If so, would those of us that have been vaccinated for malaria be resistant to the virus?
It is the harder anti-malarial to take - a number of people have nightmares and the like. I have taken it for weeks at a time with zero issues along with the vast majority deployed with me. It is readily available and the ingredients are not particularly exotic. Best news is that Dr’s can prescribe it right now while the clinical trials determine its actual effectiveness.

I don’t think this is the case. Mefloquine (Larium) is the one that gives people serious side effects and is black-boxed. I can’t imagine they would hand that out like candy.

I took Larium on and off for 5 years while working in Angola. No side effects for me but lots of people did so they took other meds.

Cloroquine is retailed under the name of Aralen. I am not familiar with this med.

Mefloquine - Lariam has the bad side effects.

Hydroxychloroquine -Plaquenil, and Chloroquine have side effect too, those two drugs might cause a run on toilet paper (pun intended).

Today in Madrid, a large hotel has been converted in a temporary medical facility for those who are infected, but not critical. More hotels will be used as such as needed.

Retired medical personnel are being asked to come back to work, and medical students are also being urged to volunteer. The Armed Forces are in full alert and helping in any way they can.

The situation is still getting worse, best hope is it will be under control in two months.

I just fear what is going to happen in Africa when the virus spreads there.

Take care my Friend!

Thanks for keeping us up to date with what is going on in Spain. You seem to be a few days in front of us.

I heard of the study. The drug was chloroquine. There were reports originally coming out of China that it worked a month or so ago. Chloroquine has been around forever. I took it as a malaria prophylactic 50 years ago. It should be cheap and easy to produce.

The study is good news. I would like to see a larger sample set but it sounds promising. I trust this information more than the info coming out of China. I can't think of a reason Dr.'s can't start prescribing it for patients now. I wouldn't be surprised if they already have been in America.

yep... it was the phophylactic of choice for troops deploying to central and south america malaria zones back in the 80's and 90's..

from what I've been told its not very effective against the strains of malaria found in the middle east and in africa.. so larium and other options have been used a lot more lately..

I read an article today where Bayer (manufacturer of chloroquine) is offering to donate its supplies to the USG immediately..

Has the CDC really done very much. If so, I am not really aware of it. The CDC completely screwed up the early testing in multiple ways. After two weeks of screw ups on the testing kits, the administration is not even including anyone from the CDC in the new conferences. The CDC has been too busy fighting obesity, gender issues and racism to spend time preparing for a pandemic. They were caught with their pants down and after 3-4 lost weeks the administration has swept them aside. After the pandemic is said and done there should be a massive house cleaning among the top people at CDC.

Private and public companies, labs, universities, ordinary people , etc are the real heroes that are getting things done and making things happen.

Companies like Bayer in the prior post are the true All Stars if they are donating their meds for free.

Man, where’s the “Like 100000 times” button. Spot on!

Actually, hypertension alone comes close to covering 40% of the population. In the study the condition was self-reported, which might mean it only captured those who were being treated for hypertension. About 9.5% of Americans are diabetic, 10% have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, 4-5% are current cancer patients or in remission, and 10-11% have chronic respiratory disease. Obviously, these conditions frequently overlap, but trying to build a work force free of any of these conditions, that also has the requisite skills and experience isn't going to be easy in most industries.
In China, 25% of cases had underlying conditions. With our quality of care in the USA, I doubt we would be higher.

A mother of 6 in Washington state just died from The CV. Article stated that she was a breast cancer survivor 42 years of age, but had underlying conditions related to the immune system, and chemo therapy. I feel bad for the 6 kids losing Mom.

I've been watching the President's press conferences. I like his dump the red tape, regulatory overburden of previous administrations. Unleashing government agencies to cooperate and allow the private sector to go full speed ahead is another plus.I shudder to think where we'd be if the previous president or heir apparent were in power.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
