Not trying to start yet another general boot thread or discussion of Courteney vs. Jim Green vs. Russell Moccasin vs. Buzz's crocs.

A search of older threads on the Courteney canvas boots saw there were some who had or were thinking of trying them a few years back, and then not much mention after. I would love to hear any first-hand reports from any owners who tried them out. Love or hate, tried once or still wearing today. Basically wanting to know how folks felt about them, especially if they like Courteney Boots otherwise, were they a nice edition or too different or didn't meet expectations or whatever.

I'm a big Alaskan gent who gets hot many winter days and somehow thought it would be fun to go swelter in Zimbabwe in October...guess its supposed to be hot there that time a year or something. And since I'm supposed to go to Mozambique next October, thinking anything which might make the temps less horrid is worth consideration.

I hiked through couple hundred miles of the Sierras during record breaking heat, but a lot of it was super dry and cool periods at elevation. I don't backpack in trail runners, I'm a boot guy when hunting or backpacking, but was happy on that trip that I had picked up a pair of canvas Crispi boots vs. my typical leather ones.

I do think the Courteney Boots breath better than any of the gortex lined hunting boots, that have the membrane and leather and other padding and what all they sew in there, but seeing the canvas made me wonder...until I cannot seem much for reports anywhere. I wear a pair of Safari's I got from Rigby almost daily but they are 1/2 big. I have worn a pair of Selous a lot as well and both of the last two hunts in Africa, they are 1/2 size big, but both of those hunts were in later May and June, so cool enough for thicker sock, so enjoy the extra room I take up with wool and quality insert.

Long story short, thinking I need to order a paid of boots, 1/2 size smaller (need an 11 even though I were a 13 in everything else), and want a shorter boot, Safari at most, but considering a tracker or one of the shoes even if I didn't give a canvas pair to spin.

I have a pair of Courtney Canvas Safari I got from Jim at ASC. I have wore them as a daily work shoe now going on 9 months or more. I’m in them 12-14 hours a day. I put a set of Dr Scholls work insoles in them. Been thru probably 3 sets in insoles already. They are holding up good. Wore them in 2024 on safari and hunting here at home and took them as daily wear back last December.

Admit I'm super curious what they look like after some consistent, solid use. The only photos I can find anywhere show them all creamy white and pristine, which I expect would last me about as long as a white t-shirt on a playground toddler after a rainstorm.

I have a pair of the canvas boots. I also have multiple other pairs of Courtney’s. I prefer the leather, it seems more durable to me.
But, I don’t have many miles in the canvas boots yet. They are very comfortable, equal to the leather boots. The interior has a leather liner.

Gokey Simba Safari boots made in the USA. I wore these this year on my Safari and it was the best pair of fitting and performing boots I have had on Safari yet. I am usually an all leather guy, but these were fantastic and the days that were over 90 degrees they were cool.

Haven't tried the Courteney's in canvas yet, but do have a pair of Russell PH's from 2009 with the canvas uppers. They're finally starting to show some wear on the canvas (wearing through in spots). I, too, would be concerned with how the light canvas of the Courteney's would discolor.

Another shoe I've been curious about is the PF Flyer Grounders (https://pfflyers.com/products/grounder-hi-sand-green).

I have the Rigby version with the leather capped toe and heel. I find them to be lighter and a bit more comfortable than their all leather counterparts. The canvas is thick which I like as these are the only canvas/nylon boots I own that the Texas cactus doesn't penetrate. How well they will hold up only time will tell but I expect they will outlive me.

Safe hunting

I ordered a pair from Rigby as well and just arrived. The run of them that Jim at Safari Creations had made for his shop still had the kudu leather liner, no toe cap, but Mark above said he loved them. I really like the look of the toe cap and maybe the extra protection…think it’s one of those things you’ll not likely need unless you do. The Rigby versions do not have a leather liner, just canvas, which feels thick, stiff, durable. We’ll see how soft, supple they get with some wear over the coming weeks.

Mark mentioned his canvas pairs have run smaller than the canvas. I have a couple pair of Courteney’s from Rigby in 11.5 which were a bit big, almost too much so, so went down to an 11. In retrospect, think the 11.5 would have proven perfect but time will tell. They are notably lighter and seem like they’d breath much, much more than standard leather version (which is likely my favorite pair) and ones with canvas and leather liner. Time will tell.

I looked on the Rigby website and did not see them. You wouldn’t happen to have a link?
Thanks

I wear the Courteney Jameson's daily, the full leather ones, and neve thought I would prefer a high boot. You don't know what you are missing, they are more comfortable than low boots and smarter (My board room attire is the same as the Save buffalo hunt attire.)
Now to see if they do them in canvas too...
Brown csnvas would solve the discolouration problem.

Thank you for the detailed report!

Interesting, How do you find them?

Pre covid I contacted Gale directly before these were available and labelled “Jameson” and asked about a long version of the Selous I had read about and was told they had not ever done it. I provided excerpts from the thread and they somehow found the old patterns and were making me a pair. Then some emails went back and forth along with a call from the Australian distributor that I took with a grain of salt.

I have some Selous, I gave my Patrol to my son as they were marginally larger than required. Great boots but being handmade I suggest anyone try them before buying

We agreed on a pair that were a High cut Buffalo based on the Selous with a Cleat sole and the then new offering of a Larger toe box.
However there was some confusion and transaction did not take place and I was told the boots were not available.

I still consider them a good boot but would like to get those I ordered with a good fit. If I ever get to Bulawayo I would probably go there to try find the same as I require the support of a high boot and think the larger toe box would also be a better fit for me.

I didn’t come up with the concept or design but I do believe the Selous boot with a high cut would be excellent.

Jake, Sorry to bug you again. I was wondering if you could share a. couple actual pics of this crossbow with me?

Xpedition Archery USED Scrapeline390X Sniper Gray Crossbow XACW1001 - Light Wear - Needs Bolt/Arrow Guide Spring UA5689

If it is in a decent shape, would you be willing to sell it for $100 shipped? IS it missing the retention spring that goes over the bolt?
Thank you Ferenc
