I would like to hear opinions and info from members and outfitter members on rhino hunt options. I think @Philip Glass did a hunt a while back?

I’m open to a hunt with harvest or a dart hunt. I would prefer a rhino with horn growth. I understand there might be a high fence involved but I’m not interested in a small property at all as I have always hunted wilderness concession areas. Is there even a completely free-range option? If not, are there large fenced properties with naturally breeding populations that are not artificially fed from feeders?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Did not hunt myself there but I was at the neighbor so to speak (De Klerk Safaris). Next door hunting reserve is too my knowledge the biggest hunting , contiguous, in south Africa. It is in the Kalahari. In know someone mentioned it in the thread about biggest contiguous hunting areas in south Africa. It is leased to CV Safaris, Coenraad Vermaak.

They have huntable rhinos.

If I am correct hunting takes place in this reserve. About 240000 acres.

Edit: 90000 hectares

I too would pursue a large property like yourself but am definitely leaning towards a hunt. Will depend on price as I'd want horn growth too.

Maybe I'm weird (ok, probably) but funds permitting I'd much rather have the actual animal vs a repro from darting. Nothing against those who do the latter!

I have a dream of taking my big 5 with my big 5 engraved double though. We shall see how the dream progresses. But someone has to hunt hunt them when they're done getting darted and are a negative impact on the herd when they no longer breed. And the additional funds are darn sure needed to fight poaching

Sure would be awesome to do a Dart/Green Hunt on a Free Range Black Rhino, real dangerous hunt on Real Dangerous game.

Namibia would be the place for that one I would say but still areas of free ranging White Rhino in South Africa, not sure on the Black Rhino so much, some of the properties I have helped on had both, a lot of people keep it quite what they have where in regards Rhino as you can imagine !

Chapungu-Kambako Safaris is who I went with. They have one of the huntable populations in South Africa and I believe its about 212,000 acres. The reserve they hunt is called @? Game Reserve. Top notch outfit all the way around and I highly recommend them.

My hunt was on a large property of about 20,000 acres. There had been about 40 rhinos on the place but we only saw 13 so they were well dispersed. The bull I hunted was old enough that he was going to start breeding his daughters so he needed to be removed. It has been interesting explaining this to people;) Especially if they are against or even uneasy with a rhino being hunted. They run out of arguments real quickly as the real world situation is explained.

It took i think 3 days to find the correct bull. I've never had him scored but even with a cut horn, there is massive girth and enough regrowth that I'm told he would score respectability. I did have two sets of replicas made, one actual and one as he might be had the horn not been cut.

It was a very good hunt experience, given what it is. There was no baiting. Strictly spot and stalk and we did the spotting on foot to make it more challenging. We were even sort of charged by a buffalo we came upon. Buffalo, hippo, giraffe, zebra, sable, springbok, Impala, wart hog were all present. Lions and hyena were on the property but in separate smaller double fenced enclosures right near in camp. So lions roaring every morning. I booked through Bossie of Limpopo Big Game Safaris

Black or White?

It’s always been my dream to hunt at least one rhinoceros in my life. It’s the only member of the African “Big Five” which I’ve never been able to hunt even one specimen of.

Mine was a white.

A couple other thoughts, and I believe all have been talked about on other threads so you can search for more info.

Consider either a dehorned rhino or look for a deal where you don't tale ownership of the horn. The horn is very cool to own, but also one big PIA. At least I keep it locked away and there is that expense ongoing and what do you do with it long term? A couple years back there was a deal where it was $6000 cheaper to leave the horn behind. Yea it is theoretically worth a whole lot more than that... but illegal to sell. Doing it over and given the opportunity, I'd save the 6k.

I did a full mount. Do NOT place that behind the couch in the living room if there is a woman in your life. She may think it's cool to start with, but even the most understanding and active hunting wife will eventually come to dispise the rhino in her living room;)

You must apply for the permits to hunt a rhino in RSA well in advance and must have dangerous game hunting experience as well as be a member of a hunting organization such as DSC or SCI.

My hunt was in the correct place and correct Province to have the best honest experience. Contact Bossie for more details as I won't publicly post. I had to shoot targets in front of the Provincial Game Manager in attendance. He was good at staying back out of the way but was there to be sure the hunt was conducted properly.

Be prepared to shoot accurately and follow up without the PH backing you up. Unless human life is in immediate danger. At least on my hunt in that Province, there was to be no backup for a bad shot other than by the hunter. The official instructions were of you don't kill it, you will follow it up no matter how long it takes. I loved that! He didn't move 5 yards but the risk is on the hunter.

Last I heard, wild Black Rhino hunts in the Namibia parks were very limited on availability, takes a bit to get a permit to import to the US and you'd want that before the hunt. And cost had dropped to about $150,000. Not sure if that is current info.

There are some Black Rhino dart hunts available, in RSA. Expect about 1.5x to 2x cost of white rhino dart.

Come to the AH dinner to discuss rhino dart hunts with Outfitters:)

When you go do the hunt. Keep your mouth shut! Everyone involved needs the hunt to be secure and so does the taxidermist. Don't even use your phone within many miles of the location.

In the latest issue of Game Trails it talks about black rhino in Namibia and the article says the hunting off take is a maximum of 5 old males which is 1/4 of 1% of the total population there. It doesn’t say it’s per year but I assume it is.

My hunt was for a sawed horn rhino bull. I was the best deal on the best hunt I could find. There are few rhino available anywhere that are not fenced. The dart hunt is a joke IMO. You only stalk and shoot with a vitamin dart then the vet flys in on a chopper and shoots it with the carfentinil and puts it down. No thanks. Maybe for black.
I recommend pricing all options as there are many rhino available and few willing to hunt them.

Are you sure this description of a dart hunt is how ALL dart hunts are conducted? I’m quite certain it’s not.

@Philip Glass hunt was August 2018. You can look it up on the forem…great read and the hunt completed the Big 5 for him which is an incredible accomplishment by a great hunter and person!

If you have the desire and the funds go fulfill your dream.
