Howdy AH,

I have up for your consideration a nigh impossible to find these days Commercial Mauser 98 (FN, etc.) flat bottom cocking piece. I have no use for it so its going up here.

$75 shipped or FTF in DFW area. I accept cash, paypal, venmo and zelle. Thank you

Interesting. I learned the hard way that there are many variations of 98 Mauser cocking piece. This is one I haven't seen. What is the purpose of the full length "flat bottom?" Something to do with commercial Mauser double set trigger maybe?

yep... me too...

when I was building mausers I ended up with a drawer full of bolt shrouds and cocking pieces.. getting the right "fit" between those two parts and the bolt body itself was always the biggest challenge in most builds I did.. I found it was easier to have a selection of cocking pieces and pick the one that was closest from the beginning, rather than spending an entire day trying to fit one that just didnt want to work at all from the onset..

I believe that is correct.. I have also read a few threads across different forums that non commercial 98s having issues with Timney triggers should use a commercial cocking piece as it will work better with that particular trigger

Possible. For the life of me I cannot see what the purpose was for the cutout in the military cocking piece sear.

A full length solid one like your commercial model seems to make more sense. It will also be smoother (slightly!) than military as the edge of the sear will only bump into the tang track once instead of twice as the bolt is closed. Perhaps the cutout is to allow for recocking the shroud/cocking piece during assembly if safety slips out of position two? Commercial Mauser would typically have two-position side safety (no position two). Yes, that must be it. The notch seems to fit my thumb. As I recall, there was a tool that also slipped into the groove cut into the rear of military cocking piece for purpose of resetting the striker to position two.

Incidentally, I smoothed my action significantly by very slightly beveling the sides of front face of cocking piece sear. My sear was bumping into the tang track as it entered it when bolt was closed. Didn't take off enough to affect trigger weight. Just a tiny bit needed to be removed. Force of gravity is all that's needed now to close the bolt (though I still have to manually lock down bolt handle of course)

I do recall having to remove quite a bit of metal from the top of the cocking piece sear to make my Timney trigger fit. Their instructions say to remove metal from trigger sear but I figured it would be cheaper to replace a screwed up cocking piece than Timney trigger (much cheaper). Takes a bit of patience and Dremel tool (boy, those things are handy - poor man's shaper).
