Cold weather head wear

I grew up in Upstate NY with lake effect snow and wicked cold temps.
I have a cold weather toque, although not made of wool.
Gets used about once or twice a year where I now live.
Good for temps down past -10 with proper layers.

A few other fleece military watch caps that see a lot of use.
One went to Africa because morning temps were at 32F.
Riding in the backie at 30mph was a little brisk.

At -35F, if I can't see the game from my bedroom window...
I'll go make coffee.

I've done miserable cold/wet hunts before.
I feel no need to prove myself to anyone.
Helping a friend or I NEED to be in it for some reason...
Fine, I'm all in and bundled up.
Otherwise, I'll have soup made for when you get back.

Thanx you guys! Appreciate your advice. I wear glasses and got my elk this year in 10 degree weather with 20 mile wind . I had a tough time exposed on that open ridge. My hunt buddy wears a sealskin trapper when we ride in the ranger in nasty stuff and when he stand hunts in cold. Anybody know of a super warm hat with a good bill to protect my glasses?
I just saw this hat on Kuiu website and thought it might fit the "bill" for you, Rick. ;)

As @Longwalker said up here in the Great White North, it’s a toque. When it’s real cold I’ll wear mine with one or two hoods up. But sometimes the hoods push the toque over my eyes so I started using the winter liner that fastens into a hard hat. May look goofy but I don’t care! Gotta love hunting in November!

FYI, KUIU has a pretty good sale going on. It started yesterday I think.

You poor people having to put up with these extremes, makes our 'chilly winters' seem like a joke. No wonder you like your African hunts.

Yup, but of course we like ALL hunts. And -40 is about as comfortable ( or not) as +40. Just a matter of perspective. Al least we can dress for the cold. A favourite quote:. "There is no bad weather for hunting, just bad choices in clothing" Where I live we have experienced weather of +/- 40°C and although I prefer more moderate temperatures, it's almost always good to be out hunting.

it’s never cold after the hounds start baying on a rabbit. At least that’s been my experience. I have found it cold on occasion ice fishing though. We don’t often see temperatures as cold here on the east cost though wind chill is the killer here.

I can’t stand anything over my ears when hunting so if the wind is blowing I wear a red heavy wool Filson’s crusher hat that cuts the wind and shields the tops of my ears and keeps the bald spot on top of my head nice and toasty. I am a still hunter so my ears are used as much as my eyes. Stormy Kromer is my usual unless real cold and windy.

I had a stormy but wasn't satisified with it. I bought a filson duck hunting hat, they are waterproofed canvas with wool lining that can buckle down over your ears. I worked on the mississippi moving barges and was out in all kinds of weather, all year round. You won't be sorry, they are a little expensive but it will last forever.

I have found that most Filson gear while obscenely expensive, if properly cared for will last several lifetimes. It is warm functional and stylish. I also have and still use a Woolrich dark red and black checked hunting coat that is over 80 years old. It has had a couple of buttons replace but other than that is in as new condition. Except for the stiff and blood stained game pocket.

Looking to upgrade my head covering for real cold weather. I am in my my mid sixties and my neck gaiter and stormy Kromer ranch cap are not cutting here in Montana for cold windy hunts .
Looking to you guys from Canada and Alaska for advice. Thanx everybody!

Layers work well. I have worked many winters running an open cab D-8 doing reforestation plowing in remote locations.

You need to break the wind, cold isn't the problem it is the damned wind. I have used different balaclavas , Helly Hansen and others. I had one real good windproof one, can't recall the name. A toque on top. If it warms up a bit take one layer off. Have some good wool toques as well. Hood over top of it gets brutal.

Once it is past minus 40 any exposed skin will freeze in minutes.

I don't work when it is that cold any more. Was fun when I was young. Nothing like getting back to camp and the propane tank is frozen and the heater won't light.

If it's in the single digits, I will wear an underamour full face mask and a thick ski mask. If that's not enough, its too cold for me!

Forgot to mention that Woolrich coat belonged to my grandfather.

you need a good ole fashioned Toque from bass pro shops. Red Head Brand.

I am the first one to own tons of Kuiu gear from my expedition and active hunts. Shit I have hockey bags full of garments. But deer hunting at home in a tree stand.... kuiu is toilet paper when its -30. I honestly find the best gear to be the red head gear from bass pro. No its not good for heavy activity, no its not good for breathability, no its not good if you want to do kung fu in it. Your about as mobile as a sloth when wearing it. BUT its warm as hell.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
