City Lodge Jo-Burg

Clean, convenient, good food, and its attached to the airport! Perfect for early departures. Ive been there many times and will stay there 3 times on my safaris next year.
I like the Intercontinental next door but with the later arrival now of Delta 200 there is just not time to enjoy this great hotel IMO.

I've stayed there 4 times. On one trip, I attempted to book with one of the two most bragged about places to stay while on your layover, only to land and be told due to power outages, we'd be staying at the airport lodge instead. Since then, I just always book there. You can use a third party booking agent, found online with GOOGLE, and you can book your nightly rate around $69 US.
The food is pretty good and I suggest getting the house special, or a local dish. I always find it amusing when people travel to Africa and turn their nose up to all of the delicious meals that are made. Why travel to Africa and order a cheeseburger? You can get a pretty decent dinner for under $15 US.
The breakfast buffet is really nice and it has a good selection. I can't remember the price, but it's not expensive.
The rooms are more than adequate. Very clean and well kept. Everything I need for a 8-12 hour layover. If you go there when it's cold outside, there will be extra blankets in the room. Look in the chest at the foot of the bed. On the last trip, one member of our group froze to death and the next day I asked her why she didn't use one of the extra blankets. She didn't know they were there.
As far as getting there from the luggage area, if you are worried you won't find it, a porter will be more than happy to load your luggage on a cart and push it to the hotel for $5. It's a pretty long walk and going to the hotel is mostly up a slight grade, so I do not mind paying the $5.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I enjoy staying there.

After 10 trips to SA and always stayed at Afton, but with their current increase in pricing I will overnite at Citi Lodge in 2023 for much less and use the difference for additional tip money.

How much did the Afton house increase to ? Stayed there in 2010 on my way to Namibia. We almost missed our flight back to USA as driver was late, so we have stayed at city lodge 4 or 5 times now instead. Was thinking of staying at Afton next time just for kicks.

When we stayed there, our flight came in real late. We went straight to Citi and left our firearms at the police station until next morning. Got them inspected and cleared to go in no time.

Compared to the Intercon it's crappy, bit of a walk and can be huge lines to check in. It is cheaper for sure though. The Casino is also nice and a 5 min shuttle or 20 min walk.

I too have stayed at City Lodge many times. Never an issue. Yes, it can be cold in our midsummer. Good point about using their blankets! :):) Bruce of Gracy Travel has always been more than happy to assist there and back to check in for continuing flights. Breakfast buffet is far, far! better than the continental breakfasts you see in most hotels.

I’ve also stayed a couple times at the Nkanga Lodge when traveling with PH. It’s about 15 mins from JNB. Secure compound and spacious, relaxed atmosphere. Good alternative to the other, often mentioned, places to stay in Johannesburg when traveling through.

How are firearm luggage handled at City Lodge check in?
Never had any problems. The don't even pay attention to your guns. When you go somewhere just leave them locked in your room. Make sure you have your gun paper work from saps . I've stayed in several places in Joberg and will take city lodge every time. Easy to get to and dont have to leave airport to get there.

No issue for me, same as rest of bags. We followed baggage cart to room with rifle case in site. Left in room for meals, during our lockdown 2 weeks SAP's came and got guns, filled in paperwork and gave me a copy. Easy.

I've stated at the intercontinental, and yes its very nice, but that's an apple to oranges comparison.

City Lodge was nice and the food was good, my son standing in the dining room. Thanks for all the replies.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
