Choose Your Weapon with Jim Burnworth

With the increasing human population of the world encroaching on the once wide-open spaces, the ranges we need to shoot at are longer than ever. Combine that with the rapidly advancing level of armor being worn by most deer and it becomes apparent that a 30-06 just won't cut it any more. A 338 Lapua really is the new minimum.

I am glad that this thread got resurrected because apparently Mr. Burnworth is so desperate for viewers that he went pheasant hunting with a .410 pistol

I have decided Jim Burnworth is only a meat hunter when he bow hunts;), other than that he is a sniper in waiting:rolleyes:o_O:p:whistle:

.338 Lapua better used as a sniper rifle cartridge etc. Accuracy International. There are better rounds out there for Elk and African plains game. JMTC.

Saul I think you hit the nail on the head. He needs viewers and is stoking the fire with anything he can get his hands on. In my mind his love of the 338 is fine but it's not for me. If my 300 win mag or 308 can't do the job I'm in trouble. Oh that's when I pull out the 45-70 or the 416 Ruger. Not my 410 Judge pistol. But my Colt M4 in 5.56 with twenty rounds can put a lot of hot metal down range real fast. Choices Choices we all have them. In my mind the 30-06 will do the work on just about anything. And some people thinks it's a dead round..... Not really!

I certainly respect your opinion however I would respond that this applies to any range. How often do hunters take snap shots or shots through thick brush at animals in close proximity because they only have a second to make the shot? I have helped track many a wounded animal from poor short range shots.

The bottom line is a person needs to have the skill and equipment to make a shot under field conditions before attempting to harvest an animal regardless of range. The skill requirements can be different from situation to situation and the conditions can change in a heartbeat. The ethical hunter should recognize when this occurs and either adjust appropriately or call off the shot.

The problem that I see these days is that alot of people are getting the equipment and assuming that the skills and knowledge come with it. This of course is not the case, and even worse is TV shows like Extreme Outer Limits where poor shooting through questionable conditions at long distances seems to be the order of the day. The horrible results are masked through editing and doesn't show the true nature of long range hunting.

I will end this with the statement that people need to shoot to the level that their skill, experience and equipment will allow under given conditions. I you can't recognize and adapt to those than don't take the shot whatever the range is.

You all might to know this about the crew at Extreme Outer Limits. He was BUSTED for Game violations and Companies Like "BERGER: still Support him.,
It is just Ridiculous that Anyone would support such a Shady Individual. In Bergers Case I will assume it is Because of Money.

Jim Burnworth is a Product Whore. You Should See Him Walking around the Shot Show In las Vegas. He asks everyone for free stuff because he thinks he is a celebrity or something. He has almost zero Knowledge of Ballistics and Will Shoot anything if you give it too him.

What does your post or the linked vid have to do with Burnworth?

I would put forward that neither are good choices for an inexperienced marksman. My reasoning is that the most important thing for a new shooter other than some proper instruction is practice and lots of it. I typically advise new shooters go for a cartridge that will allow them to shoot large volumes of ammunition with minimal physical or monetary impact.

While not as glamorous as the lapua or super high velocity uber-magnum wildcat cartridges the old .308 is available in quantity anywhere, easy to shoot and won't break the bank.

I'd rather be partnered up with a shooter that can drill a popcan at 200 meters under field conditions with their trusty .308 than a guy that has never pulled their rifle off the bench because it too expensive or hard to find ammunition.

But what do I know.

Cheers,

John
When you can take a Large male Kudu at 200 yds with one shot, with a 308 who needs a 338Lapua

The point of my long rambling here is basically I find these television celebrity hunters to mostly be full of it and despense terrible advice to sell products.

This is my impression...much of the advice is not worth the electrons it takes to run your TV.

If I was going to shoot something with that much recoil, I'd take our 7.25 lb (with scope) 375 Weatherby. Shoots a 300g bullet at 2700 fps without breathing hard. Haven't hunted African plains game and I hear eland are huge, but out here in Colorado a 270 is considered plenty for elk and fine medicine for moose as well.

JB is not a hunter. He shoots for the TV. Many of the animals he poses with where shot by other hunters as the ones he shot at where wounded and lost. He likes to throw tantrums in camp especially when there are women about.

Shady character and he does not drink a drop, grandpa always said "son don't trust a man who don't drink".

Ray Bunny was a much more stand up guy and a better hunter, guess that's why he left, as he was much more of a hunter.

Would not need those if he(or others) just got a bit closer before shooting. It is called hunting and certain skills/luck is what you should have. It is not called long range sniping for a reason.
That said I have taken game in Africa with my 338win mag at 480 yards, warthogs at 410 yards and a bunch of animals from 250- 375 yards.
The Kudu did not need to be tracked. My daughter shot warthogs, Impala, Red Hartebeest with her 257R at ranges out to 405 yards and constantly in the 275-380 range without problems and tracking.

I shot animals with the same 338win mag and a 257W my last trip at ranges 250- 550 yards. Normally my PH would not have the hunter make such shots but since he found out I could shoot he "wanted to give me a challenge". But I then miss a running warthog at 125 yards and that that deflates my head. :)

So I call BS about his choices without even going into the wildcat problem and recoil problem and such

My 2 Cents

PS--I have never seen his show and after seeing this I probably will never.

Your observations are almost word for word those of a friend who unintentionally shared a camp with him a couple of years ago.

To me, a miss with a canon is still just a miss. IF you can handle a 338 Lapua and shoot it well, and afford it, good for you. Use it. But, for the vast majority of hunter, that is an awful big 'if'. It seems, to me at least, the people chasing the biggest, fasted wiz bang wonder cartridge often times are basing their decision on what they read or hear. Shooters with more trigger time tend to make different decisions and selections. ie..the 270 to 300 group of cartridges, and enjoy great success and enjoyment for it. Personally, the 300 WM isn't even exactly fun to me. I'll take a 7mm Rem Mag every time. I can't imagine a 338 Lapua, necked down to 7mm, would be pleasant by any means. Just because a TV personality said it, doesn't mean it is so.

To me, that alone discredits his 'expertise' and supposedly being a professional TV hunter by making such a silly and misleading statement. Low recoil, perhaps by comparison to the full 338 bore? But still not low by most subjective standards.

I think he shoots his bow with amazing skill and grace but heck he does it for a living. Cameron Hanes is amazing too, shooting a bow on TV! I just can't dedicate that much time to shooting, I wish I could but that is not reality.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
