No one forced Kenya, Zambia, or any other country to take these loans. Too many people and now countries borrow money and when they can't or won't pay the loans, they suggest that somehow the lender was at fault. Maybe they did make it look . . . what is it we say . . . "too good to be true"? Well, guess what . . .

One good one was when in a photo camp over from the hunting area we were in (to watch rugby match as they had sat Tv....) And one of the guides came in from long drive to nearest town....he said just heard some great news.....the Chinese are going to make the road an all weather dirt road for free......they only want the timber for it was I think 100 metres either side..the road was 90 kms...it was a few years ago now....we just looked at him and shook our heads.....

Not sure bout that....but they are setting stores up in villages....and even selling roast maize on roadside . ....I saw driving into lusaka couple weeks ago on the front page of one of the newspapers a seller was holding.. The headline was " the Chinese are like cockroaches".... there was a plan where there was going to be a Chinese police inspector and Chinese in the Zambian police to be at some police road blocks.....i can say that that didn't get too far as a lot of people didn't like it....

Some of the people but they are too ingrained into massive construction projects so the govnt isn't going to be doing anything. ...also individuals are buying chunks of land for farming . They own shops .mines. construction companies. Malls.hotels. casinos.and most other businesses you can think of......so many of them in the country they not going anywhere. ......

China’s modus operandi with third world countries seems to be:
1. Do $1B of infrastructure work
2. Pass out $300M in bribes
3. Saddle the country with a loan of $5B for work done.

Nationalizing all the Chinese major investments may be the way this works out in time. Same as african countries did with European projects a half century ago.

The real problem is all the small tentacles reaching through Zambian society by the local Chinese. This may be a source of problems for eons.

Every place in this thread that says "Zambia" could be replaced with "Bolivia" and be just as correct. They are bribing the crooked officials (most) and spreading thru the country like a fungus. Their wanton slaughter (yes slaughter) of Jaguars for "medicinal purposes" is what bothers me most. Sustainability has no equivalent in Mandarin. Take all you can get seems the rule. Dozens of other countries likely have this same problem with the Chinese. On the plus side, I met a polite Chinaman in the JNB airport in 2016. He offered my elderly uncle a chair when all was full. I damn near passed out.........................FWB

I talked with a young American who just got back from living in Zambia the last few years. He said there are a great many Chinese living there. No families, those are back in China but they all work for Chinese companies. I teach HS History, this comes up in my lessons as we compare the present to the future.

The Russians were real successful in Afghanistan surprised they would want to be in that mess. My opinion is them countries deserve the Chinese and Russians. They won't treat them has nice as the U.S does. They will line them up in front of a ditch like the Serbs did and I am not sure if anyone will give a damn.
