Recently in the tread about discontinued products Wyatt smith , Bob Nelson , myself and a few other gentleman were discussing the merits of several brands of chainsaw including some of which that are no longer in production. I thought given that most of us on the forum likely use chainsaws at some point be it commercially as land owners or lease holders clearing shooting lanes and food plot areas ect. We should have a thread discussing them.

Myself I collect jonsereds specifically but not limited to the 600 series.

Currently for jonsereds I have
625
630 (x2)
670
520sp
2055 (x2)
2038

Also have a few Husqvarna and stihls mostly because I don’t trust my employees not to ruin my jonsereds.

What about the rest you? Must be some others on here that appreciate vintage saws. Show us your collections.

I have a Tanaka for about 16 years and that saw is a beast and never fails me. Good cutting chain makes a good saw. Cutting wood can be therapeutic at times.

I run Husky 572 and Echo CS620 and 400. My all time favorite was(is) a Stihl 044. I pounded the hell out of that old guy for 20 years until I semi retired and then like a damn fool I sold it. Regretted it ever since and would love to get another one. The epitome of performance and reliability. The only downside for me was the lack of antivibe. They would shake you pretty good.

Recently been cutting a few logs to mill out for a hunting camp I want to put on my woodlot. Strategically cutting so as to also end up with a few small food plots when finished. Cutting about 4000bf out of three future stand locations. Currently burning brush and clearing the undergrowth waiting for the ground to harden enough to put an excavator in and remove the stumps.

Last picture is of my hired man good enough guy but hard on gear, worked for father in the woods 35-40 years ago when he first started logging now working for me the last couple months before he retires funny how some things work out.

Yet another essential item ruined by “reverse engineering” and over seas production.

I learned the hard way to not buy chainsaws from the big box stores, Home Depot destroyed my confidence in Husqvarna.

It’s to the point now, if I want quality tools that work I have to buy them second hand at estate sales.

I had an old dolmar that was a hoss. It was heavy but it would run a 24" sharp chain through oak like butter. It must have turned 18k rpms or something.

Please forgive me! BUT, this one is the one I use most. Perfect for pruning my fruit trees, prepping trees for deer stands, cutting firewood or this last season, our family Christmas tree. It is lightweight, fits easily in a daypack and requires oil but no pain in the can fuels. I use it indoors for my taxidermy projects. I already used it to clear a road of fallen trees while running spring cougars.
We use Stihl at the fire dept where I work but this little battery op works great around my home and camp. My kids even love to use it!

I did that for awhile and it didn't work out. Now I buy from a real dealer. May pay a little more but the stuff is checked out before leaving the store and I get real service if I need repairs, etc..

I run a stihl 361, husky 045 ( not sure of the number it’s sitting in the barn), and a stihl 151, I had jonsereds in the past. I bought the 151 for notching the logs when I built my house and have come to really like the size for smaller work, you don’t feel like a monkey humping a jug at the end of the day.

A lot of the time if we were in bigger timber father would fell with one saw and limb with another for that reason. Generally a 266 or 272 and then limb with a 44 or later a 254. Even a couple pounds difference would mean a lot at the end of a long day.

I run a stihl MS two ninety one … it’s all I need to maintain our hunting property, cut a cord of firewood, etc… farm and ranch grade twenty inch bar, etc etc

I’ve been thinking about getting a smaller, lighter stihl for days when I need a chainsaw, but the workload is lighter/smaller…

You can’t beat the stihl 170s for light work. I keep mine on the sxs all the time and use around the yard constantly.

I’ll check out the one seventy!

My next Stihl purchase is probably going to be a “farm” grade brush cutter… I’m thinking an FS ninety one is in my near future :)

Make sure you get a straight shaft the bent shaft ones were terrible for breaking joints atleast when we were doing silvaculture work.

What about chains?

I haven’t been satisfied with stihl factory blades.. they’re decent quality.. but they’re also x the price of other brands and performance wise I’ve found better options…

A buddy that’s big into chainsaws recommended these to me… they’re cheap… but have been stellar performers… full chisel cuts hardwood like butter.. and edge retention has been excellent…

You’ll laugh at the 170 when you see it , 199$ Canadian on sale and more plastic than steal but they work. Only one I’ve scene die got run over.

I run square chisel Oregon on my husky/jreds and used to on my stihls but you’ve got to switch out the bars to do it. I ran it because you can by chain by the roll an make them yourself a lot cheaper.
