Cataract Surgery advice & info needed

Big bores are not a problem. My doctor was fine with me shooting a week later, although I waited several as I wasn't sure he understood what it was I shot and the recoil. Pressure is much more of an issue with cataract surgery, so bending and lifting. That type of thing.

The Zimbabwe Dr. that I saw could not tell me how long he had been doing the surgery or how many he does a week? He did say he had been doing it for quite awhile and does quite a few, hhmmm?

You only get one shot at your eyes.... I'm not sure I'd be letting that doctor do it.... I'd at least go to South Africa and preferably the United States.

The "normal" lens are good at distance. The more expensive ones add intermediate and/or close-up vision. It's all about preferences. None are as good at all things as the actual human eye.

In Dallas you have UT Southwestern Medical School, the best in Texas

Plus one on this. I had some complications from lasik years ago in addition to the cataracts. No one seemed willing or able to help me. I finally went to UT on the advice of a Doctor friend of mine and got help. My vision still isn't quite where I'd like and I just had a second surgery (PRK) on one eye , but my vision is much better than it was before the surgery regardless. Again, my issues go back way before cataracts.

Had mine done end of 2020. Intraocular lens replacement. Rt eye for distance left for close-up. Best thing is open sights are back on the menu. Brilliant result all round.
Always wore spectacles before , no need anymore

I had both eyes done 8 years ago and choose the distance variation, i.e. need glasses for
reading but not for outdoor activities as before. It worked great. My Opthalmologist did not recommend the bifocal variation and said they sometimes do not work properly and then
have to be removed. But he advises to use the tinted version -about 3%- to protect the retina.
I recommed you use a specialized surgeon that does this type of surgery on a regular basis- that
means at least once a week...
As to shooting there was never a problem up to .458 Lott, and my eyesight improved incredibly.

Lon, I had cataracts removed from both of my eyes in 2017. I opted for the standard / cheaper lens because my Dr. told me that night-time driving could be a problem with the expensive lenses. I waited several months before shooting my 416 Rigby and or my 404 Jeffery rifles. BTW I was totally amazed at the improvement in eyesight. They offer "laser" surgery in the States that is probably the better way to go. Why? Because it is much more accurate.

I had cataract surgery on left eye, selected a "distance" lens to be installed, did the drops for about a month to prevent infection, did not bend over or strain for two weeks following surgery and all turned out well.

I also stayed away from the woods to prevent any branches or leaves from hitting my eye that may have caused issues.

I learned from lasik years prior to wear swim goggles when showering to keep water out of eyes.

I now have a cataract on my dominant eye, but it has not developed to the point where surgery is needed yet.

The nice thing here in the US is that you no longer have to wait until the cataract is "ripe" so to speak.

If you and the Dr are willing to have it removed then you can do it

I had cataract surgery in late 2020. I was near sighted and after the surgery my far vision is perfect and my near vision needs just minimal correction. That took some getting used to.
As far as shooting big bores, my doctor, who occasionally shoots some trap, told me that after about three months I could do whatever I wanted. In 2021, I shot 50-75 rounds each, of 375 H&H, .416 and .458 Lott. No issues.

I just chatted with a buddy of mine, he is an ophthalmologist and a hunter. He said under normal conditions, once healed, you should have no restrictions at all.

I have had both eyes done, its like being 21 again, distance vision is now very good, no issues with heavy recoil, had to get new reading glasses went from 2x to 1.5x wonderful results. The surgeon was a F class shooter.

I have done both eyes in separate ops ; the surgeon was Dr Eddling from Opti vision center in east london -RSA; I would consider Dr Eddling a top class surgeon !She has had excellent results as I hear from all that go to her services ; I have had no problems and my vision has improved tremendously ; she recommended sunglasses whenever applicable and I have stopped using normal glasses ; I avoided doing any diving immediately after the ops ; I have shot with my 375 brno 602 action and with my sarasqueta side by side gauge 12 and have had no problems at all.

Had one eye done in June 2018, went to Africa with a .404J, hunted and took a buffalo, wart hog and zebra. Came home, about three weeks later had the other eye done. Was on the range 2-3 weeks later. Never had an issue.

I'm 62 and had new lens put in both eyes about 7 years ago. Best thing I ever did. My eye sight in both eyes is now back to better than 20/20.

My surgeon (in Australia) insisted that he would only use "Zeiss" lens, as in his opinion they were superior to any other on the market. He then offered me the choice of either "single distance" or "multi focal " lens. I choose the multi focal and I now don't need glasses for reading or for anything else. The only down side to the Muti focal lens are that some times, with very bright lights at night, you can get a halo affect around the light. I have rarely ever noticed it and when I have it doesn't bother me.

Best thing for me about them is no glasses needed and I can see clearly all of the iron sights on my rifles.

I regularly shoot 200 plus 12 gauge in a day and regular shoot 375, 9.3x62 and 416 Rigby rifles. I've even put a few rounds through a friends 500 Jeffery without issues.

Good luck with it.

Opt for the Schmidt & Bender quality lenses! ;) Get the fixed 4x and forget about scopes! As said above, the best eye surgeons in America, you see....
Sry, almost forgot the Disclaimer: Warning: Your Wife may appear Bigger than Actual Size (had to!) It would've been wrong for 99.9% to use the term Objects.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
