Canvas/leather gun slip

Ok, so I posted a day ago about building a light weight gun slip for Africa. It was deleted by moderators….why? Good question. Let’s try this another way….say I’m going to “buy” a slip not “make” my own.

I’ve read where soft cases are too thick for the gun racks in land cruisers, socks are aggravating and offer no protection…..many recommend a gun slip.

Some say red oxx, some say Murray custom leather…..

What works? How thick are they? Lined, quilted? The one I’m looking to “buy” has two layers of natural 10oz canvas with leather muzzle protection. It happens to match the hunting belt and rifle straps I “bought”. Is that enough protection with still fitting in gun racks? Should it have light quilted batting or just double canvas?

If I were in the market for a canvas slip, I would look for an outer shell in the 18 oz range. I would definitely want one lined with flannel and a light quilting. Old wool military blankets make a great liner without quilting if you can find someone that does that. Hard to beat a 6 oz Horween leather tip and trim if you can find one like that.

If I were getting one to take to Africa I would look for one in 5-6 oz deer tanned cowhide. No liner necessary.

I used a Boyt canvas gun case. It worked perfectly in the gun rack of the cruiser.

I just got a Loden gun slip from a little shop in Bavaria. Not sure of the rules for mentioning but check out Franken & Cie. They have an online shop. High-quality stuff.

In regards to fitting in the gun rack. I have used a pretty thick soft case with plush lining, and my case and rifle fit in the rack. However, I'm sure there are lots of different gun racks used, so others might have a different experience. I liked having a case with more protection.

Yeah, I saw his post, and he makes a good point. A cool feature of the loden slip is that it is possible to unzip it so you can shoulder the rifle via the strap while the rifle is still covered. I know everyone has different views about they get to stands, etc., but I like that feature which is different than my other gun cases.

I did just finish up a bow shade for my boat….its made from Sunbrella canvas awning fabric….while not traditional, I did contemplate using it.

I prefer more protection (padding). On my first safari, the truck had gun racks like used to be in the back window of every pickup, but mounted for the bed. I was using Midway’s heavy duty soft case. Had to wedge it into the hooks. On my second trip, I was glad I had the extra padding as the rifles just rode on the floor of the bed.

Anyway, if you are going to "buy" a slip that has leather that can touch the metal work, you need to make sure it’s veg tanned as chromium leather can react with the metal if it gets blood or water on it. In humid conditions it can cause surface rust overnight.
