Can it be true...MRC is GOB and CZ is stopping the 550

They have priced themselves out of the market. Base rifle without optional stock, checkering, inlet etc., etc. is $8,995. By the time you are done almost $11K-12K

I can get a custom rifle built with an action and barrel of my choice, Turkish stock or better, all put together for less than $6K. Synthetic or laminate stock is more like half that.

Tanks, One could do it for half that price. I build customs for myself and all in with premium parts, I spend 1500 to 1800 and that's including a solid composite stock. If I want to go premium wood, it's another thousand and that's with someone else doing the stock. Chamber jobs go for 300 to 500.

Depends on the parts though. I like the Defiant Hunter Action. With CRF it is about $1,500 add a Proof Research barrel, gunsmithing and you are at $3K+ then the stock which can be $3K+ for premium wood or much less with composite.

CZ stopping the MAGNUM actions too? I knew about in standard calibres.

I wonder how they are fairing vs the Mauser 98 / Rigbys that are coming out. Also Zastava will still sell you a rifle in something large.

It's ironic that apparently the only CRF action CZ will make will be for 7.62x39 / .223 Rem / .222 ...

Scrummy

You're right, it depends on the parts. :D
AFAIK, The Defiance action is a push feed. If I was going to build a CRF, I'd go with a Thompson-Leh. It's a Remington footprint so anything aftermarket in that form factor works with it.

IIRC, the only line that CZ was discontinuing is the Safari models.

No they are still making medium calibres .308W, 7x64, 300WM etc but it's now in the push feed 557 :( Interestingly CZ's European website doesn't list the magnums anymore.

This is even worse news if you're a left-hander like myself. I can work right-handed guns fairly well out of necessity, but it requires extra motions. I was looking at some of MRC's left-handed models for my eventual buffalo rifle. I'm sure something suitable will pop up in the next few years.

Try Zastava. I know a guy who built a LH 500 Jeffery on a Zastava. Nice to shoot. Punchy though...

I will take a look, and it's not like every LH MRC rifle in existence will go away with the company. Sometimes you get an idea in your head and it's hard to look at other plans when you've already reached a conclusion.

With the demographic shift, I predict more of the same and an increase in demand for custom built rifles.

Stands to reason if we can't get store bought we'll go custom. There are plenty of builders out there.

CZ 2020 Catalog still lists the 550s in big bore cartridges like the .416 Rigby.

What caliber are you looking at? I am a lefty and Ruger was wise enough to make their Hawkeye African in a lefty in 375 Ruger. I own one and have had no issues with it. CZ did have the 550 Safari in Left handed 375 H&H until a couple years ago so keep your eyes open on Gunbroker and such. And Sako has lefty M85 Hunter models. Larger gets tough.

I think you may have talked me on to something. I am not set on a caliber yet. A buffalo hunt is still several years away, so this is all window-shopping for me at the moment. I hadn't considered the .375 Ruger, but I think I might need to consider it.

From the looks of things , it would appear to me that the market for large game rifles will now predominantly be taken up by Winchester and their Model 70.
They are the only company who appears to be going strong .
I also do believe that the Heym Magnum Mauser action rifles will also get popular now .
Also , l do not intend to hijack this thread. However , l have been wondering for quite some time :
Why has the Dakota Model 76 bolt rifles never really caught on with any of our African Hunting Forums members ? They appear to come in quite an extensive array of classical big game calibres .

Major,
The purchase by Remington put Dakota into a tailspin. I had a model 10 single shot in 9.3x62 on order that I finally cancelled when it was going on 9 months past the promised delivery date. They build a beautiful rifle and they are great folks. I truly hope they get things sorted out.

A Model 10 in 9.3x62 would be a sexy little number! @TOBY458 were looking at their Alpine in 9.3x62 and Daddy WANT!

Deviant Hunter action has an option for CRF for an additional $150 as well as a Winchester style 3 position safety ($140 with a trigger package).

Thank you so much , Tanks. This is why l was wondering why the Dakota Model 76 bolt rifle receives almost no mention on our forums whatsoever.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
