CAMEROON: Cameroon Savanna Hunting Safari

Philip, you will love Masailand, that was my first hunt in Africa. Around Mto-Wa-Mbu and surrounds. Classic safari country. Oddly enough buffalo are not always a sure thing in that area but I did manage one there, though it was many years ago now, 1985. Also took good examples of Grants, Thompsons, impala, hog, zebra and white bearded gnu. We drove from Arusha to the hunting area and it was long and painful but no expensive charter. Hope you can make that happen.

I will never discount a persons concerns for personal safety when planning a safari. It is a real concern many places. All of the trouble is on the borders and I have not heard of anything recently. I suppose my point is that the general public thinks all of Africa is dangerous from reading news stories. Chicago at night is dangerous so a person just has to decide what they are comfortable with.

I agree, and yes all of Africa is dangerous. But so is everywhere if things go south. I wouldn't wander around Chicago or Joburg at night without armed guards!

I think they have 4 big safari areas. I am primarily interested in hunting with him in Massailand for the gazelles etc. The whole time he was telling me stories of hunts there! It will have to be a few years but I am most likely going with him. They have a package just for the PG plus Buffalo for a better price than others. They also allow two hunters to share one license as there are two of each species on one license. This would reduce the massive costs to hunt TZ a bit. Plus Massailand does not require a charter which is big bucks there.

Yes, I remember you telling me that you were interested in the gazelles and other unique Massailand species. I highly recommend a hunt there as it was among my favorites.

Do Not Travel to:

• North, Far North, Northwest and Southwest Regions, and Parts of East and Adamawa Regions due to crime and kidnapping.
• Far North Region due to terrorism.
• Northwest and Southwest Regions due to armed conflict.

  I don't know what areas are used for hunting, but it isn't just the "far north" that is level 4, its lots of the country. Look I am not trying to say anything other than there is obviously a need for caution, and nothing should be taken to mean anything about Philips hunt.

I don't think the State Dept makes any distinction on level 4 areas as to whether one is guided or not, its means Do Not travel to. They cant tell you not to go of course, simply they are saying if you do go and get into trouble, they wont be of much help.

My point was that the highest risk of terrorism is in the far north. As someone who has been attacked in CAR, I would not go to the far north of Cameroon or areas bordering CAR. As for the hunting areas where street crime and other non-terrorism types of crimes can occur, my point was that being escorted is generally safe and definitely much safer than traveling alone. Every time I have been to Africa, I see westerners traveling unescorted and I actually do get updates from the SD recommending against unescorted travel and to stay away from meetings and large groups of people. I also get updates that are sent to SD employees mandating that they may not travel to certain areas unless escorted. I wouldn’t go to the south side of Chicago unescorted either. I have clients there that are police and they are just cleaning up the aftermath of crime there instead of also trying to prevent it due to criticism from the press and lack of support from the mayor’s office. This tracks along with the actions, or lack thereof, of police in Africa.

Really enjoyed the report and pics ! That's a dream hunt for most of us and one I doubt I will ever do. Priorities....

And plus one on the Cipro! I got a second bug on the way back from Zambia this year and was puking my guts out in the Nairobi airport.... Took cipro and it helped amazingly quickly. I really thought I wouldn't be able to fly back at one point.

Random question how was the flight from Douala to Ngaoundere? Any scheduling issues?

Yep. Cancelled on the way out. Barely got a flight from Garwa and had to leave camp at 4AM to make it! The Hunting Consortium has the connections to make things happen. I was told that the flight was full but I magically got a seat due to knowing the right people. It is great that there are domestic flights because it would take two miserable days to drive but they can be unreliable.
