Camels, Australia, Camel meat??

I was fortunate enough to be invited on a fantastic camel hunt back in 2013 with some fellow forum members. I used my 350 Rem Mag with 225gn Woodleighs and accounted for a few nice bulls.

It's a serious undertaking in seriously remote country. You need to be well prepared. 1 million acres of almost nothing, barely a fence or track. For me, two flights and two full days driving, sleeping in a swag by the roadside. I woke up on my 34th birthday in a swag somewhere outside Longreach.

An epic adventure. Oh and it tastes good too, a little chewy if not aged but very tasty.

even an average sized adult camel is all but impossible to turn over with 3 guys.
it takes 2 guys to pick up a head and neck attached to the body.
they are big and heavey.
big old females stink, and males stink a lot more.
the easiest meat to get is a front leg, and the best is backstrap, both from young females.
getting backstrap is a bit of a job.
9.3mm and 375 are good killers of them.
being in open country mostly, I often wonder about a heavy hitter that has a +/- 3" point blank out to 300 yds, and is also shootable.
7mm stw will do the job with barnes, but only on selected shots.
other shots in good places for enough gun can leave the stw out on a limb.

Chiming in a bit late but just saw the thread. I was on that trip with Blacks and it was a top trip. A camel can be taken with a 243 but I would say 270 or 308 as a minimum.
Plenty of fat under the skin and it sticks to the hands.

From memory we took some meat from the rump. We let it aged a couple of days and it was good chewing. Other blokes on that trip did the cutting up and cooking. Lucky for everybody I wasn't doing the cooking:eek::LOL:.

I have used my 35Sambar and 416Rigby on the camels and another mate on my second trip used a 270.

Their hair is full of dust and dulls a knife blade quickly.

Can’t speak for the down under crowd but I have spent way too much time East of Cairo. The Arabs eat a lot of baby camel for special occasions. Think holiday dinner. They will not touch an adult one except for the milk which is very popular.

Didn't Cleopatra also bathe in camel milk all the time to preserve her beauty?
(or does my fantasy go through with me once :-) )

Another thread digressed onto Camels from big bore cartridges. So we all like guns.
Anyone want to talk about hunting camels. Culling them for property owners. Taking Camel for meat?

I’m hoping to get one or some , in a strange twist of fate I know someone wanting to butcher one. I’m going to try hatch a plan with him.

What it’s do people eat? How do you cook it? Do you cull them or hunt selectively?

@PaulT and @BenKK are Aussies who chimed in earlier.
@CBH Australia
Chris seen plenty of camels in the bush when unarmed.
We have farmers markets over here and one was selling camel meat. He was doing a roaring trade with Middle Eastern people so I thought I would get some as well.
Got a nice big camel rump steak and cooked it medium rare and served it with a Diane sauce and veg.
Bloody beautiful even better than beef in my book. Don't over cook or you will end up with boot leather.

I've not had camel but surely would accept if offered some. All the bad reputation they suffer and the analogies given seem to point to "tastes horrible like goat/mutton" or "too dry" which suggests to me that improper cooking, improper meat care, and a juvenile palate are likely the blame, not the animal.

If you cook a waygu beef steak the same way you cook a pork shoulder or vise versa, both will suck. I'm sure that same logic applies to camel as fine cuisine.

@rookhawk Who told you Mutton is horrible?
I like lamb and Mutton.
Most of the Goat is export unless you seek it out.
I might try some Camel but I'm not in a position to cook a whole one like the Arabs do so I hope it turns out ok..

Easy fix mate. I know you have the skills and technology to overcome that small problem. Build a bigger barbecue or spit ya Muppet, problem solved. The only problem I see is finding a tub big enough to marinade the bloody thing but that's easy solved use a dry rub.

I think it would be quite entertaining to see @CBH Australia being instructed by @Bob Nelson 35Whelen on how to best give a spicy hand rub to a camel… :D

They are delicious. Imbeciles and incompetent chefs say they’re terrible.

@VertigoBE
It would be bloody hilarious especially if'n the camel was still alive. Even I would pay to see that, but I did mean to the meat before it was cooked and not on the hoof.
I don't mind my meat a bit rare but that would be a bit to rare ifn it was still running around.

I’d pay to see that video! Ha! Ha! Ha!
@CoElkHunter
I would pay to see it. @CBH Australia chasing a bloody big camel around the bush with a big packet of spicy rub yelling get back here you big bastard, get back here. I don't think even Chris we old be that silly. MMMM maybe a Forrest Halley would be tho. Worth considering.

Bob,
I don't run anywhere, much less while carrying a big sack of Spicy Hand rub for Camels.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
