has anyone tried this out for real out in the bush/camp?
i've also seen the you-tube demo's in the back yard, but for real?

any feedback would be appreciated as i plan to also try it this winter and any suggestion/tip would help

Yes, it works well. I use it often. Pine logs are best, with a little Blitz down the middle. You have to time and watch your cooking, though. Great for warmth if your wood is limited.

In Germany these were called Flemish Torches. They were cut from shed dried pine and then sawed vertically with a chain saw. If you lok at some of my photos of the post hunt in Germany you will see them burning in the background around the streck. I've never tried to cook off of one, but there doesn't seem to be a reason that it wouldn't work.

First time I ever seen it as well but looks like a good idea. seem like a way to cut down on the amount of firewood you would have to bring camping.

ive not seen that before but the very first weekend i can get to go hound hunting (2weeks until opening )i will be trying it and if it works observe your gunna be a legend mate .
i can see 10 or 12 blokes cottoning on to it pretty quick in hound camp

I have done it.(not very successfully the first couple of times) Make sure you have a dried out log. The problem is you go from tinder to solid wood with out much kindling, if the log is moist it can be very difficult. A little charcoal lighter fluid helps alot. As was said earlier, pine is probably better than the oak that I have used. Once you get it going it will burn along time.

bluey,how about trying this clay cooking skillet [pan] also out while you are at it and give us some feedback?
do you think it will also work with eggs/fish/meat?

i plan to try this one also this winter,but any tips[or mistakes you've made] will help me 'cut some corners!' while out in the bush near the water , lol

i have tried the clay thing, not like that we wrapped clay around the fish and cooked them in the coals ,they looked alright but tasted like shit .(mud)
since then we just find a flat river stone and build a fire around it then dust it off and cook on it like that its good for steak and fish but i havnt tried to cook eggs like that
ussually if we take eggs camping we arent walking in to far of the track ,and then we:ll have fry pans and the rest of it .
if we are going for a good walk generally its 1pot or pan and a knife and fork and a roll of tin fiol for a plate .or we eat out of the pack you put the bioling water in .
i wish the computer on the boat had volume so i could hear what that hippy type dude was saying ,i will watch it again next time im on land .(that and 30 other things on the list)
with the cross cuts in that bit of wood when i get to try that one i will let you know for sure mate thats going to be known as the observB Q in eastern victoria

I use dried out 'used' tea bags soaked in Paraffin as firelighters. I still have a couple of the old 35mm plastic film cannisters. Just stuff it full of tea bags and soak them through with paraffin and seal! Small to keep in your pack!

Talking of fires, during a desert ride, we used 'petrol stoves' to cook on. Just fill a metal open topped container - small pot - with river sand, pour in 2 cups of petrol and fire up! It burns for quite a while...enough to cook on!

ive been told about the petrol and sand in a metal tin from some old bushies but always thought the tucker would taste like petrol
do you taste the petrol or is it o.k ole bailey?

Hey Bluey,
No it's fine! the petrol is clean burning unless one has added oily additives! You can't 'braai' or 'barbie' on it because of the flames but for cooking in pots it's great!

do you think your tea bags will work with this concept for cooking?
how many teabags for this small container and how long will the flames last?

maybe if the tea bags can be used with old coals for a small braai?

maybe something to think of as a multi-purpose mini emergency braai for wet conditions etc?

i love the 'survival'/mc gyver direction this tread is getting for the multi use of everyday objects out in the camp/bush
i'll pick your experts brains on ideas and also probably swamp it so much that jerome will ban me from it! lol

I do like the way they respect their harvested game though! Pity more people didn't have respect for the animals they harvest!
