Building a 404 J

Just put my 404 on the scales, 4.73kg(10.4 lb) empty with a 4x weaver steel tube scope. I started with a Peruvian standard m98 action which I did a considerable amount of work on before I even touched the feed rails, moving the bolt stop, milling out the back of the receiver and then the front etc. The bottom metal I milled the back off the mag well and then added a piece of metal to the rear approximately 3.5 mm back, then did the same to the front, I thinned the side walls at the back to gain another couple of mm in side width, i extended the hinge knuckle and the front of the floor plate metal and redrilled the pivot pin hole 4 mm further forward so the hinge would work. When all that was done I then started on the feed rails, widening the opening and slowly tweaking the shape till it allowed the cases to feed whilst also working the front receiver ramp. I would hate to think how much a smith would have charged

My original plan was to attempt modifying my Mauser's bottom metal. Dwane Weibe suggested (strongly) purchasing something new instead. I'm glad I followed his advice! Modifying existing Mauser 98 bottom metal to work with 404 Jeffery may not be rocket science ... but it's pretty close to it. My hat's off to you!

I’m a glutton for punishment, I’ve also built an 8x68S on a Parker Hale 98 action and have done a lot of the same work again on that. When I have more time I’ll make replacement perch belly bottom metal plates for them both which will hopefully get one more round down in each

I'd be interested to see how that turns out. So they're both 3+1 now? Not sure I need five rounds in the gun but if it isn't too much fuss, I might consider it. Hunting alone I'll carry one in the chamber but with PH and tracker I'll only load the chamber for final stalk. I put a 3-position Model 70 style safety on this build and very glad I did. My scope is quick detach and when it's off for iron sights the typical 2-position Buhler style scope relief safety is too exposed. It is easily disengaged by being caught on clothing, brush, etc. This is an issue for my Springfield 30-06. I have to carry it empty chamber when the scope is off. With scope attached, the safety is well protected. I will order a 3-position safety for it too ... but they are VERY expensive. There is a way to make a Model 70 safety work on Springfield (M70 bolt shroud threads right onto Springfield) but it requires a machine shop to make a new striker.

They are both 3+1, there’s almost enough room in the 8x68 , as is, for another round though. I’ve used the Parker Hale safety on both of them, not the best but out here the model 70 style are so expensive as to be ridiculous, I’ve only fitted iron sights to the 404 with quick release rings

What kind of loads have you worked up for your 404? I would like to step down to something less than 400 gr bullets for elk and deer but not finding any data for powder. I can pick up some 307 gr bullets at Hammer, and Cutting Edge also has quite a variety but I'm not sure about CE's hand grenade design for animals I want to eat. I understand Woodleigh also may have a wider selection but very hard to find that brand up here.

I’ve only worked on 400gn pills with adi powder( 84 gn 2209)
gumpy, I have some 360gn Atomic29 projectiles (high quality Australian made cnc turned copper projectiles) that I haven’t done much with yet, I wanted to finish my 8x68 off and then the wife got really sick so everything went sideways for a bit, I’ll hopefully get back into it shortly

Hope your wife is doing better. Looking forward to an update on project and projectiles.

I forgot, I’ve also got a 370gn cast bullet mould that I also haven’t had time to use yet, need to either buy or make some gas checks first

Appears Woodleigh is back in production but I don't know what the schedule is for the 350 gr RN .422" bullet, but I'd think it would be a dandy for elk from a 404 under about 250 yards.

My metal finally came back from bluing. Just finished reassembling. Turned out nice.

And after bluing.

I did the work adjusting feeding rails. It cycles like glass flawlessly.

I used a Magnum length M70 donor rifle, gave it to Jim Kobe in Bloomington Minn, ordered a 24" Douglas barrel.fullsizeoutput_aa7.jpeg I supplied a used custom shop stock I grabbed off of E-bay Jim did the rest of the work. Nothing Fancy but it works for me.fullsizeoutput_cc9.jpeg

Very nice. I bought my stock from Gunpost ad. It was semi-completed never mounted. Turns out the fore end tip was badly damaged by the factory carving machine, forcing me to try my hand at making a tip. Only rosewood available locally was poor quality. I was rushed to get the gun done in time for August safari and no time to order anything so I grabbed a chunk of zebrawood the shop had on hand. Made it work. I ordered an "old English" recoil pad like yours but forgot to adjust for one inch of wood to cut off the butt. Consequently, the pad was too big and I wound up cutting into the internal baffle when trimming it. No time to order another so I resurrected an old black one I salvaged years ago from a broken shotgun stock. Doesn't look very Africanesque but it works. The stock was factory cut for a Parker Hale style trigger block safety. I had already installed a 3-position Model 70 style safety so I filled the trigger block cavity with brown epoxy. The stock has two birdseye knot blemishes near the butt but they don't affect structural strength. Turned out looking like a working gun rather than a work of art. I'm okay with that. This gun is a reflection of the guy who built it and how he hunts. I keep looking for a nice piece of wood to come up on eBay but maybe I should just stick with this one. Bought it as a "learning tool" but the end result was much better than expected. Metal fit to wood is almost perfect. Hard to throw it aside. Perhaps I'll just build another fancy rifle as "a work of art" ... just to say I did it.

Not visible but I added a second internal recoil crossbolt because I didn't have time to build a jig for a second external one (the external crossbolt ahead of magazine was factory installed).

Personally, I would probably have someone like Reto Buehler (or another top maker) handle everything (then you don’t have to worry about getting things together yourself), building on a GMA action. He (Reto Buehler) also does integral feature barrels. If my budget allowed for it that is..
Exactly what I had done and exactly what I would suggest.

I'm not an engineer or a machinist but with a bit of long distance professional guidance and encouragement (thank you Duane Weibe), and an ability to think outside the box, I was able to do most of this build myself. Tackling a gun build project requires courage and a desire to learn ... but isn't that why we go hunting? To brave the elements, explore the unknown, and conquer unexpected obstacles.

I disagree with Bert. If you have those not terribly unique qualities listed above, I strongly suggest building your own gun rather than having someone else do it for you. When my grandson is my age he will be able to go the safe and pull out this 404 Jeffery for his friends to see. "That's my Papa's rifle. HE made it!" Or maybe he'll pull out my 30-06 Springfield: "And that's the gun his dad made for him." Parker only has 25% of my genetic material. That's not enough. I'll top it up with a 404 Jeffery I built on a 98 Mauser.

1) John Boliger
2) Winchester Model 70 action
3) Douglas Premium barrels & New England Custom Guns

Great info. Looking into this myself.

Great topic. Following with interest. As much as I love the 375, I feel more comfortable on DG with a little heavier caliber...for me, it's largely the 416 Rigby, which I used on elephant recently with good results. I haven't been a 404 guy but I respect it and know it's hugely successful.

Thats a fine looking 404, but no recoil pad? Doable but seems to me a bit uncomfortable?

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France
