Buffalo surprise

Bull seems done after first shot. Must have spined him. Hmmm. Maybe not. Note how the bull is able to arch his neck as dying. Clearly not broken. Interesting. Wonder where that first shot impacted?

That guy has reflexes of an F1 driver...

But he was also prepared; gun at low ready with his right hand near the safety and trigger. As CMK points out above... had the charge come from the right, his first shot might have landed a split second too late.

I sure would like to know the rest of the story. He mentions seeing buff tracks as if they were not trailing a buffalo.

Yes. I don't think the PH would have been blabbering that loudly if they were after a wounded animal. They surprised the buff too close and he reacted.

I am humbly privileged to own and have hunted with a double rifle but prefer my bolt actioned rifles, most with model 70 type safeties. I believe there is no way to get a bolt action rifle without a tang/shotgun safety like a double rifle has in play fast enough to not get stomped in this situation. It makes a person think. Wow!!

Africa's Sportsman Channel now has it up on their YouTube channel with the comment. "Africa is full of surprises, and walking on buffalo tracks does not always mean the buffalo are in fron of you. Great reaction by PH Russel Field with a 500 NE and footage by Chris Pelser.

I’ve done two separate Buffalo hunts with a bow. Stalking only. No blinds or water holes. ( not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

I didn’t get a good shot on my first hunt.

5 days into my second hunt. I finally got a shot, I had a PH I trusted right by my side.

I remember my first Cape buffalo. 5 days to get him and I started wondering if I was just not as smart as a buffalo. Water buffalo, on the other hand, are far easier to stalk and less likely to charge but actually seem to me to be an even tougher animal to bring down. A couple years ago, the head of the Mexican hunting federation was killed by a water buffalo in Argentina.

PH was following up buff hit by client, buff circled around, PH hit it in forehead, just below the boss. The final shot was off camera. I expect nothing less from the genuine professional that Russel is, and for him it's just another day at work.
